@ChiefEngineerCE Keep the info coming. We both had our careers detailed by 'globalization', although the changes started earlier, in in '96-'97. We landed on our feet, but I never recovered my prior earnings after 2001. Hubs did better for long enough to raise the kids. Brutal.

@Katie4west7 @ScottPresler You'd be surprised at the condition of some of the elderly coming to vote in person. Many of them come with 'helpers'. I have no issue with someone pushing a wheelchair. I take issue with the helpers telling them how to vote or helping to fill out the ballot.

@ryangerritsen There have been reports of arson in the US too. Spending time in the Rockies, I see huge stands of beetle-kill pine. It's a terrifying added fire hazard. Several factors contribute to this epic mess. The US and Canada both need intelligent, pragmatic mitigation strategies.

@HistorianUSA1 @JacSarobahs I never witnessed indigenous fire starters in my summers in Ontario, but I'd like to know more about this practice. Indigenous people certainly lived with the annual cycles of nature, and it's not the first time I've heard that they practiced controlled burning.

@NeilEJohnson It wasn't always like this. There were forest fires, but with more localized impact. Beetle kill is a factor, creating more fuel. More resources need to be directed toward forest management to reduce the frequency and scale of wildfires. I don't think it's simple or cheap

@BeerCan45 I experienced the heavy pall of smoke over NY and PA a couple of summers ago. Pea soup and eerie. Horrible to breathe. My elderly mom is in the soup now. Ugh.

@homemakinghunny @LisaMcCorm70 Voting can become an illusion of choice. Citizens need to engage earlier, so candidates standing for office better represent their interests. Most citizens go about their lives and only vote in the final round, after the choices have been winnowed down by the political process.

I think many mean well, but by opposing fire access roads and other measures, they increase the risk of large wildfires. We're also dealing with invasive insects killing large stands of pine.

@CoffeeC80751972 @homemakinghunny Canada used to know how, thru controlled burns, reductions in undergrowth, etc. It requires the use and maintenance of access roads and personnel. Have forestry budgets been reduced in recent decades? If forests are afflicted with pine borers more money is needed to reduce fuel.
