My health insurance company has decided that I, an insulin-dependent Type 1 diabetic, only need to test my blood sugar 5 times a day, down from the 6 they previously “allowed” Note to reader: if I only knew my blood sugar at 5 points throughout the day, I’d be dead.
@Kidfears99 There was a point in the early weeks/months of diagnosis for my son that he was having 14 injections a day. That’s just the injections… let alone the finger pricks required before, in between and after! And not accounting for a variety of monitor errors requiring MORE strips! 😵💫
@hellokitty1211 EXACTLY. At 5 strips a day, they’re essentially limiting diabetics to two meals max with no room for error.
@Kidfears99 @hellokitty1211 This is ridic. I think I have a decent amt of extra strips and other supplies leftover from GD. Gave birth 6 mo ago so not that old. Don’t remember the brand of monitor I used but could check. Happy to send if helpful
@Kidfears99 @hellokitty1211 Doesn’t make sense. At just 5 tests a day a diabetic can’t control their blood sugar levels well, causing more expensive health issues down the line. It would save them $ in the long run to make sure you maintained healthy blood sugar levels, & those test strips are key to that🤷🏻♀️
@Kidfears99 @hellokitty1211 It's because the basis for care is based on the "best practices" for T2, and there were a few (now very outdated studies back in the late 90's/early 00's) that said that T2's testing more than 5x a day provided limited benefit to a1c and future complications.
@Kidfears99 @hellokitty1211 Did they miss the memo that a starvation diet is no longer needed or medically supported to treat type 1 diabetes since the discovery of insulin or something?
