If you never want to be an inconvenience, then you’ll never have any meaningful friendship, a meaningful marriage, or any meaningful relationship with anyone. To love someone is to inconvenience them, it is to need them, it is to interrupt their plans, it is to ask for help, to need a ride at 2 in the morning to the airport, to need a store run because you must eat pickles right at this moment, all of it an annoying inconvenience. And yet all of it also a wonderful inconvenience. To be loved is to be inconvenienced, because a life where nobody bothers you, where nobody inconveniences you, is not a better happier one, it is just simply, and plainly, terribly lonely.
lowkey i think the dividing line between being a good driver and a bad one is can u read the body language of cars
i recently saw this post saying artworks like the starry night are more impressive not because they are hard to draw but because they are hard to imagine and it made me think of how all good art is imaginative and reinterpretive and activating in a sense!
They say by the time your child is age 12, you would have already spent 75% of the time you would ever spend with them. It’s 90% at 18. It's a reminder of how quickly these years pass right now the days feel ordinary. Daily routines, exercise eating, but these is the majority of time we spent. The truth is childhood is short but I don’t use it as a reason to feel sad but as a way to not take for granted and lean in. The mess that I have to pick up daily, the conversations that feel small but mean everything. One day these years will just be memories and I’ll be so happy I slowed down to notice them. Slow down and make the most of these little years because this is where almost all the forever memories come from.
When I was thirteen, my best friend died and I reacted in myriad unhealthy ways, so my parents took me to a psychiatrist and I was disgnosed with depression and prescribed Zoloft, an anti-depressant. But I wasn’t clinically depressed; I was sad, and I had a good reason to be. So, I think a good thing for a lot of young people to hear is that being sad is okay because sometimes life sucks, but that doesn’t mean you’re depressed or something is wrong with you. Your emotions might just be working the way they’re supposed to.
I once talked about how many people get tired of marriage because marriage is boring and many people can’t deal with boring. I got many backlash because “how dare you call marriage boring?” lol You must understand that a beautiful life is a peaceful one, you don’t need something to always be happening for you to be ok, sometimes, just soak in the little things, live and enjoy the moment. If you cannot just exist without something dramatic happening, staying married might be difficult
Men, do not marry a woman who does not know how to be bored!
I think people underestimate how beautiful it is to become ordinary to someone. To be loved when you're not interesting that day. When you're tired, sick, boring, stressed, and you don't have the willpower to entertain. We put so much emphasis on keeping love exciting, on being amused, that we forget how intimate it is to become completely familiar with another person. To come home after a long day, hang up the expectations of the outside world, and know that you are still chosen, just as you are.
I once talked about how many people get tired of marriage because marriage is boring and many people can’t deal with boring. I got many backlash because “how dare you call marriage boring?” lol You must understand that a beautiful life is a peaceful one, you don’t need something
I once solo-traveled to NOLA and tested the beignets at six different locations in a single day. I was certain that Cafe du Monde was overrated and determined to find my secret "best spot". I wasted my time so you don't have to waste yours. Cafe du Monde was the best.
Tourist experiences in the US that are worth it: - Chicago River Architecture Cruise - Pike Place Market - Cafe du Monde What else ya got?
Are humans supposed to have this much information? It is overwhelming.
Forgive yourself for not yet being who you want to be. You're working on it, w/ the tools & bandwidth you have-- & if you're not there yet, you're not there yet. No shame. Just identify the next teeny, tiny micro choice you can make to nudge .01% toward your new identity today.
In 2nd grade, my daughter was taught with paper & pencil for math. Textbook. Worksheets. Flash cards. End of the year score she was within the national average, scoring in the 46th percentile. In 3rd grade, she was taught using iReady, almost entirely digital math instruction. Her end of the year score dropped to 21, below the average range. In other words: the digital technology in the classroom, ed tech, made her learn less. It’s the Chromebooks. Get them out of the classroom.
Not every homemade meal will be perfect. Sometimes there are no clean socks. Appliances break. Air Conditioning goes out. Cars break down. And a thousand other things go wrong. You have a choice on how to handle misfortune. How you treat your spouse and children in those times is of supreme significance as it displays your character.
Tech CEOs ban phones for their own kids and send them to schools with almost no screens. Jonathan Haidt laid out the pattern clearly. Even NYU graduate students perform better when laptops are banned from class. After the big push for 1:1 Chromebooks and iPads around 2014-15, test scores fell in the US and across many countries on PISA. Sweden and Denmark are now removing the devices and going back to paper and books. Silicon Valley’s previous gifts to kids (smartphones + social media) already proved disastrous. EdTech looks like the next round of the same experiment. The people who build the tools often refuse to let their own children use them the way schools now require. That gap should be the first thing we talk about.
Umberto Eco, who owned 50,000 books, had this to say about home libraries: "It is foolish to think that you have to read all the books you buy, as it is foolish to criticize those who buy more books than they will ever be able to read. It would be like saying that you should use all the cutlery or glasses or screwdrivers or drill bits you bought before buying new ones. There are some things in life that we need to always have in plenty, even if we will only use a small portion. If, for example, we consider books as medicine, we understand that it is good to have many at home rather than a few: when you want to feel better, then you go to the 'medicine closet' and choose a book. Not a random one, but the right book for that moment. That's why you should always have a nutrition choice! Those who buy only one book, read only that one and then get rid of it - they simply apply the consumer mentality to books- that is, they consider them a consumer product, a good. Those who love books know that a book is anything but a commodity."
there’s this new tiktok trend where people do “readathons.” i just watched a girl read the count of monte cristo in one sitting over 21 hours
Real friends can handle both your bad news and your good news. Jordan Peterson’s test is simple. When something goes wrong they listen and sit with you instead of explaining why you’re an idiot or telling a worse story. When something goes right they actually celebrate it without envy or one-upping. If the people around you start objecting when you try to put your life together, they’ve just shown you they were never friends. Letting them go is better for both sides. Most people keep the wrong crowd out of loyalty. The useful ones are the ones who stay when your trajectory changes. The cleanest filter for friendship is what happens when you start doing better.
American foods are cleverly changing their names because they no longer qualify as that legal food. - Pringles used to be potato chips, now they’re labeled as “potato crisps” per FDA rules - McDonald’s Shakes are now called “shakes” (not legally milkshakes in some states) - Klondike Bar is no longer a chocolate shell, it’s a Chocolatey shell (not real chocolate) - Dairy Queen: All items are “treats” (no “ice cream” on the menu) - Oreo changed the spelling to “creme” (alternative spelling, not real cream) - Tyson changed spelling to “Wyngz” (It’s a processed chicken labeling trick) - Costco Blueberry Bagels labels as Imitation blueberry bagels (no actual blueberries) - Pearl Milling Company Syrup (formerly Aunt Jemima) Now ‘Original syrup’ not maple syrup. The first ingredients is corn syrup. Our food is a science experiment. Make America Healthy Again.
A common trigger for dissociation is our environment being a mess & our daily life feeling unlivable. It's hard to stay present when we hate what we're looking at w/ our own eyes. Organizing & time management may sound boring, but they can make us much less trigger-able.
Van Gogh painted this in one of the darkest years of his life, and it might be the most hopeful thing he ever made... The painting is Almond Blossoms, made by Vincent in 1890. Branches of white blossom open against a clear blue sky, and there is nothing sad in it anywhere, which is remarkable, because of when he painted it. His brother Theo, the person who had loved and supported him his whole life, had just had a son, and named the boy Vincent, after his struggling uncle. When the news reached Van Gogh, he started painting right away. He chose almond blossom on purpose. In the south of France the almond is the first tree to flower, sometimes as early as February, breaking into blossom while winter is barely over. It is the tree that announces that life is starting again. For a new baby carrying his own name, Van Gogh painted the most beautiful symbol he knew for new life. He was, at that very moment, seriously ill. This was the period of his breakdowns in the asylum at Saint-Rémy, and not long after finishing the picture he suffered one of his worst attacks and could not paint for weeks. And yet what he made for his nephew has no shadow in it at all. He gathered whatever strength he had and poured all of it into something joyful, a gift for a child he wanted to welcome into the world. Theo and his wife hung it above the piano in their home, and it stayed one of the most treasured paintings the family owned. The baby it was painted for, Vincent Willem van Gogh, grew up, kept it safe, and went on to found the museum in Amsterdam that holds most of his uncle's work to this day. This, to me, is what makes the painting extraordinary: a man at the limits of his strength, who would be gone within months, looked at a new life just beginning and painted hope. He reached past everything that was breaking in him and made, for a baby, a picture that says the same thing the almond tree says every year: winter does not get the last word. Something is starting again…
