I met today with Deputy Foreign Minister Rudenko at the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. During our meeting I conveyed New Zealand’s ongoing opposition to Russia’s war against Ukraine and our concern at the deteriorating human rights situation in Russia.

Stuff certainly takes on lots of things/media names - but it also offloads lots as well when they don’t work. It is unafraid to try, and seems not constrained by its own challenges.

And look I’ve got a tiny baby and I’ve had no sleep so I’m not sure if this thread makes sense - but i think it’s important that we all remember that the world is complex and beautiful and unpredictable and journalism should reflect that, and not the banality of bloody analytics

P.s. Worth mentioning that research by the Infrastructure Commission found no evidence of economies of scale in local government in New Zealand. This might suggest that there's a stronger claim for economies of density.
Great analysis from Jonathan. Another metric that I'd like to add into the mix: local rates in $ per capita per year. Auckland has, for example, relatively low local rates per capita yet it also has a low % increase in rates. Perhaps evidence of economies of density / scale?

@JonoMilne @NewsroomNZ Useful info, thanks. My impression would be that long-deferred spending on infrastructure maintenance and investment has now reached the level where the potholes/collapsing poles/pipes bursting can no longer be ignored
@JonoMilne @NewsroomNZ Great analysis. One thing to add would be debt less salable assets. Auckland and Christchurch do well on this measure, Wellington does not.
