On Thursday morning a company called Rotork, which most of the country has never heard of and all of it should be proud of, agreed to stop being British. It makes the valves and actuators that open and close the flow in pipelines, reactors and water works - an unshowy, world-beating Bath engineering business that has been trading since the 1950s, and it is being bought by the Swiss group ABB for £4.1 billion. The board said yes to a price 73% above where the shares had sat the day before. That premium is the whole story in one number. A foreign buyer looked at a British company and decided it was worth almost twice what the London market said it was. They are not being generous. They can see what our own market cannot bring itself to price: that British firms are going for a song, and the money that knows what it is doing is scooping them up before the rest of the world catches on. Rotork is not alone, and it is barely this week's biggest. Foreign takeover offers for British companies have already passed £150 billion this year, the highest since anyone began counting in 1980, and 86% of every takeover in Britain by value is now a foreign buyer lifting a domestic company off the board. Intertek, Schroders, Tate and Lyle, the food half of Unilever, Gooch and Housego of Torquay sold to a private-equity shop in Washington last week - the flag comes down on one after another, and the queue of new British companies coming to market to replace them is next to empty. This is what a country looks like once it has made itself cheap and persuaded itself that being cheap is the same as being open for business. Five years of the highest energy costs in the developed world, a tax system that bills a firm for existing, gilt yields that make capital dear, and a Government that greets each sale as a vote of confidence - and the result is a fire sale, handed to you as a compliment. When the deal completes, the thing does not merely change hands. The head office goes. The senior jobs go. The profit that used to circulate here is routed to Zurich or to a fund in Delaware, the research follows the money out, and a firm that answered to British shareholders answers instead to people who owe this country nothing. Our own pension funds, which ought to be first in the queue to buy Rotork cheap, gave up holding British shares years ago - so the cheapest good assets in the Western world are being bought by everybody except the British. Progress means to make Britain the place these companies are built to stay, the cheapest industrial energy in Europe where today we suffer the dearest, a tax system that rewards the firm keeping its headquarters and its people on this soil, and pension rules that put British savings back to work in British enterprise. We built the finest companies in the world here once. We can keep the next ones. Every board that says yes to a foreign premium is taking the only rational choice a broken system leaves it. That system was a political decision, and a political decision can undo it, the moment this country puts into office people who want it to own the things it makes. Until then the sale goes on, one unshowy world-beater at a time, and one morning we will look up and find the shelf bare.

The Government has just crossed a line. The decision to legally recognise Islamic marriage ceremonies inside UK mosques is not “modernisation” it’s state‑sanctioned parallel legal systems dressed up as reform. For years, politicians insisted that Britain had one marriage framework for everyone. Now they’re carving out bespoke legal pathways for specific religious groups while pretending it’s “fairness.” It isn’t. It’s fragmentation.This move doesn’t strengthen social cohesion it undermines it. It doesn’t protect women it risks trapping them in systems where community pressure can outweigh individual rights. It doesn’t simplify marriage law it politicises it.Britain should be moving toward a single, unified civic standard. Instead, the Government is bending the law to accommodate religious authorities inside places of worship, creating a precedent that will be impossible to reverse.This isn’t progress. It’s appeasement. And it’s another example of a political class too afraid to defend the principle that the law of the land should be equal.

LGBTQ+, freedom of speech, beer gardens, women’s rights, freedom of religion and belief, equality before the law, accountability of leaders, animal rights, dignity of the individual, all of these are predominantly Western values. Imagine your life, with Western values stripped away, imagine what that means for you, you kids, your family and friends. Forget ‘uniting the right’, we need to unite all those who are willing to fight for, and defend our Western values, because once they are gone, they are gone forever. No other political party pledge matters more than that of demographic security. And only one party is offering it. @restoreBritain

The Government's trade deal with India will mean that it's cheaper to hire an Indian worker than a British one. And amazingly, they've just made it even worse. Most other countries are perfectly happy to strike trade deals without forcing us to undercut our own workforce. We should have expected India to do the same. Instead, under the terms of our Free Trade Agreement with India, Indian companies will be able to transfer their workers to this country more easily. Once they're here, those workers will be able to avoid National Insurance payments for up to five years. The same is true for employers. Previously, that exemption applied for three years - which was already bad enough. Instead, both employee and employer will pay into the Indian social security system instead. This National Insurance exemption will make it much cheaper to hire Indian workers, in fields like IT and engineering, than to hire domestic talent. Let's imagine a British IT firm, set to hire a computer programmer for £60,000 a year. To hire them, an employer needs to spend £60,000 a year on their salary, plus £8,250 on Employer National Insurance. That's a total of £68,250. An Indian competitor with an office in London, meanwhile, can save money by transferring Indian workers to the UK, even if they pay the same headline salary. They’d still spend £60,000 on the salary - but instead of paying National Insurance, they pay into the Indian Employee Provident Fund instead. Mandatory contributions to the fund are capped at 15,000 rupees a month, or about £120. That means that, across a year, an employer only pays £1,470 into the social security system - for a total of £61,470. So under this Government's deal, it would be at least 10 percent cheaper to hire an Indian worker over a British one for this job. This is absurd. Over five years, it would be nearly £34,000 cheaper for an Indian firm to bring over an Indian worker to London than to hire locally. The reason for this absurd arrangement is that the India deal includes a Double Contribution Convention. DCCs make it easier for international companies to transfer their workforce. They're designed to stop highly-skilled workers from paying into two different social security systems. We already have Double Contribution Conventions with other countries. However, these other countries tend to be either: (1) roughly as developed as the UK - in the case of countries like Canada or Japan, or (2) very small - in the case of countries like Jamaica. India is by far the poorest country on the list, and by far the largest. The net result of this deal will be more Indian workers in fields like IT and engineering, undercutting British workers. Given the relative markets in the UK and in India, we shouldn't expect this to automatically be a like-for-like swap in terms of talent. We've seen this happen in the US already, with Indian consultancies leasing their workers to American companies, who are then able to pay an Indian worker far less than they'd need to pay an American. The result has been a massive expansion in the number of lower-cost Indian workers, at the expense of American workers. We should not be allowing other countries to dictate the terms of our migration system, in exchange for some trade benefits at the margins. If India wants to trade, then we should trade. Migration shouldn't even come into the equation.

Imagine you build a successful business in the UK. It makes £10 Million profit. First you pay 25% Corporation tax = £2.5 Million. Your net profit after tax is £7.5 Million. Average UK P/E ratio for public companies is ~15.4. Let’s use that as a proxy. This business is worth £7.5 Million x 15.4 = £115.5 Million. UK Government wants to tax you 2% wealth tax on your net worth above £10 Million per year. 2% x (115.5 - 10) Million = £2.11 Million. So you have to pay yourself a dividend of £3.48 Million which will pay 39.35% dividend tax to pay the wealth tax. Remaining Company profit = £4.02 Million. If you want to have that money, you have to pay dividend tax again. After the tax you have £2.44 Million. So the net effect is that if you make £10 Million, the UK Government will take 75.6% of it as tax. Almost half of this tax comes from the 2% wealth tax. It’s an extra 35% tax on profit in this example. Problem is dimwits who were “good at maths at school” and politicians don’t understand basic maths. This will mean absolutely nobody will take the risk to invest or start a business in the UK. What is the point? If you are lucky enough to succeed, you will get punished hard. Jobs will not be created. Investment will dry up immediately. Anyone starting a business who is young enough will move. The power of FAFO will lead to a collapse in living standards and a collapse in economic growth. This will destroy the UK economy and be the biggest own goal in a generation. This month the Energy Secretary approved his third large solar farm in a fortnight, one of them on prime farmland across Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire that his own inspectors told him to refuse. They walked the site. They said no. He signed it anyway. So here's the grand plan. Take some of the best food-growing soil in England, ground that has fed people for a thousand years, and bury it under glass panels shipped in from China to catch the famous Lincolnshire sunshine. In a country where the sun knocks off mid-afternoon for half the winter and turns up for roughly eleven per cent of the year, we are concreting over arable land to harvest photons that mostly aren't there. A British solar field spends most of its life doing an impression of a very expensive greenhouse with the plants missing. The panels tilt hopefully at a grey sky. The soil beneath them, some of the finest in the country, sits in the dark for forty years quietly learning to be a car park. And it doesn't come back. Not in your lifetime. They are making a permanent decision about a temporary energy fashion, on ground you cannot un-glass, against the written advice of the men they pay to give it, in the same fortnight the same government swears food security keeps it awake at night. Sunniest idea they've had all year.

Disgusting. The University of Aberdeen says it is “looking into” comments made by employee Heather Herbert after she publicly celebrated the death of former MP Ann Widdecombe. Responding to the announcement, Herbert wrote: “Some good news for once. I hope it was an extremely painful death.” She then added: “I hope she was handcuffed to the bed as she screamed in agony.” A local report says Herbert offered no apology when questioned, while the university confirmed it was examining the matter. You can disagree with every political position Ann Widdecombe ever held. You can criticise her record, her beliefs and her words. But publicly fantasising about a 78-year-old woman being restrained and screaming in agony is not political criticism. It is grotesque. The University of Aberdeen now needs to decide whether this conduct meets the standards it expects from somebody publicly identified as one of its employees.
