@Jason_Shetler This is a very fair point if you’re comparing it to trading Cruz. One difference is the Bay trade was done early in Huntington’s tenure while they were in year-down mode. He went for a volume of prospects. Moss was playing through injuries with the Pirates.

@Jason_Shetler I loved Pedro but he was more of a close-your-eyes-and-swing guy. He never stopped swinging at that slider in the dirt. Esmerlyn Valdez has a very good eye and a mature approach. He’ll still strike out a lot because he has a big swing but is a better hitter

@AustinOravec The only reason to include Valdez rather than Florentino or Garcia is you think Esmerlyn’s past few weeks were a fluke and unsustainable. He’s not going to stay this hot but I personally think his power is real.

@BobSmizik Agree. Triolo currently has the third lowest WPA (Win Probability Added) in all of baseball. Jacob Gonzalez has 209 games at short in the minors. In 199 at bats in AAA this year he’s hitting .317 with 19 home runs and a 1.088 OPS. 1st Rd Pick in ‘23.

@jspin80 @garymo2007 Your skepticism is probably wise but consider this: The Padres are last in all of baseball in runs and need offense. They’re 48-48 and still in the race. Cruz & Miller’s contracts and years of control are similar. A “Baseball Trade” where both teams win.
