Changing the way rice is grown is a significant way to reduce the impact of one of the most important global foods. Reducing water is an important step. Using drones for fertilizing or doing anything else that would be done by hand makes a lot of sense. apnews.com/article/vietna…
While groundwater is not the major source of water for irrigation, at 982 km3 per year, it is the most extracted raw material from the Earth. nature.com/articles/s4189…
Environmental impacts can be offshored by policy differences across countries. If every country had strict, enforced policies, it would be hard for any country to offshore its impacts. ourworldindata.org/effective-poli…
"If we could agree on common global metrics and measures and report disaggregated data, not averages, we would know where impacts are and what causes them." Read "Rethink Food," the weekly WWF newsletter — and subscribe! mailchi.mp/a61673e9c5fb/2…
Most of the people who I speak with in Europe are not asking for agricultural production to become equal globally overnight. Most would be happy to see that there is common agreement on key impacts, metrics, and measurements. washingtonpost.com/business/2024/…
Japan offers a lesson for us all in reducing food waste and its impacts. Legislation in in 2007 paved the way for Japan's strategy, and today 70% of its food waste is being used in animal feed. feednavigator.com/Article/2024/0…
If the EU wants to ensure the sustainability and resilience of soy and palm oil, it needs to think more strategically. Rather than try to add value or create separate supply chains, it might support solutions making all production more sustainable. phys.org/news/2024-04-w…
If nanofertilizers live up to the hype, they will certainly be useful. But it is unlikely that they will be available and affordable in the next 50 years. The question is whether there is a way to make this technology open source to speed its spread? nature.com/articles/s4189…
Emily Moberg of the Markets Institute at WWF recently published a piece on WWF's Sustainability Works blog in which she examines how companies can improve tracking GHG emissions throughout their supply chain. Well worth a read. worldwildlife.org/blogs/sustaina…
Innovation is generally about improving efficiency, but also about focusing on better actors and/or those able to pay for innovation. The problem is that the biggest global food system impacts come from the 10-20% of the least efficient performers. mailchi.mp/8e282a531fd2/2…
"If we look beyond demand for a specific tool and selling new products, there’s one question at the end of the day: Are we solving the biggest problems affecting the global food system?" Read "Rethink Food," the weekly WWF newsletter — and subscribe! mailchi.mp/8e282a531fd2/2…
Raising the temperature of the freezing standard for food to minus 15 C is estimated to reduce 17.7 million MT of CO2 emissions, the equivalent of 3.8 million cars. forbes.com/sites/forbesbu…
Rising ocean temperatures will affect not only fisheries and their reproduction but also the food chain — the plankton and phytoplankton. We will soon discover how closely these parts of the food chain are linked or adapted to water temperature. nytimes.com/2024/04/10/cli…
Farmers and farming organizations have taken the position that all farmland needs to be retained to produce food. In current reality, many farms produce cotton, hemp, and Christmas trees, while others cater to tourists, have Airbnbs, etc. bloomberg.com/news/articles/…
Modeling suggests that the 2030s will be one of the driest decades ever globally. So the issue with water is that we have to produce more with less — not just per ton of crop but in absolute terms. nature.com/articles/s4146…
From farm to table, every step adds to a product's carbon footprint. Learn how companies can track and mitigate their emissions across the entire supply chain in our new blog post by Emily Moberg. worldwildlife.org/blogs/sustaina…
My guess is that through regenerative agriculture and other practices, farmers would more likely reduce their GHG emissions by cutting input use than by increasing soil carbon over time. The reduced input use is easy to measure and it is permanent. reuters.com/business/envir…
"If countries waste more than 25% of their seafood imports, or any other imported food, should they be allowed to continue importing those products with impunity?" Read "Rethink Food," the weekly World Wildlife Fund newsletter — and subscribe! mailchi.mp/7bc5c7f15b43/2…
Earlier this year, researchers from the University of Florida Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences found that the waste rate of seafood in the US was 22.7%, or about half of what had been previously suggested. blogs.ifas.ufl.edu/news/2024/04/0…
Diversified agriculture helps retire more marginal lands, which are not very productive and require more inputs to be less productive. It also allows these marginal areas to produce what they are better suited for, e.g., environmental and social benefits. science.org/doi/10.1126/sc…

Can soy become free of deforestation, conversion, and human rights abuses? 1st Soy Traders Scorecard from @World_Wildlife and @GlobalCanopy looks at the 22 most influential soy trading companies and finds they must take bolder action. soyscorecard.panda.org/traders/

This statement masks a key land tradeoff: 1. High & growing global production/consumption of animal-based foods is a key driver of ag land expansion, deforestation, & biodiv loss; BUT 2. Industrial/intensive systems generally use *less* land per kg of meat produced, not more. 1/
