A8: I can't say that any one thing stood out. I have learned so much in all three book clubs. It will be interesting to see how this all changes me. #D25forEquity
A7: I have truly appreciated Kendi's openness with his journey in discovering who he is and how he wants to address racism. My journey begins with my own education. #D25forEquity
A6: I feel having a stronger education about our past coupled with a deeper understanding about politicians and policies can help combat racism. #D25forEquity
A5: We all need to better understand both local and national politics and politicians. When we vote, we need to do so with equity in mind. #D25forEquity
A4: Students need to understand politics and how policies are made. True activists work to have policies that support true equity. #D25forEquity
A3: I think people need to know the complete and honest history of racism to better accept people of all races. #D25forEquity
A2: Although it was a short passage, Lincoln seemed more concerned about the Union than about slaves. #D25forEquity
A1: Give them safe spaces to have their voices heard and respected. #D25forEquity
Janelle Dufer. 8th grade ELA. Looking forward to warmer days, pool time, and pleasure reading. #D25forEquity
A8: Students must learn/believe in equity for all people. #D25forEquity
A7: There has to be equity for all people..period. I have an autographed copy of Backlash by Susan Faludi from the 1990s but am guilty of not having read it. #D25forEquity
A6: Teachers must work to build connections with every student. They must help students understand their strengths and work to strengthen students' weaknesses. #D25forEquity
A5: Teachers need to make sure that they know the complete and honest truth about history and teach it in a non-biased way. #D25forEquity
A4: To create equity in the classroom, teachers need to understand each student's needs and be sure that each student receives what he/she needs to be able to access the curriculum successfully. #D25forEquity
A3: When you group together race and behavior, you can be racist towards your own race. #D25forEquity
A2: It seems like there needs to be a way to have equitable policies and antiracist politicians that ensure individual power for all. It seems that you only have power if you feel you do. #D25forEquity
A1: Show how everyone would benefit from equitable policies. #D25forEquity

A8: One experience was when he described his conversation w/ Sadiqa about the strategy of uplift suasion. He described the burden he felt of being perfect in front of both White & Black races. He had to act superior, otherwise he would be bringing his race down. #D25forEquity
A8: (1/2) I will remember the story of Little Kendi & how upset he was when he saw injustice but didn’t quite have the language or avenues to express himself. How will we shape our classes in a way that will honor and empower student voices? #D25forEquity
A8 (2/2): This stood out the most because it’s what we all need to do in order to start the path of being antiracist. #D25forEquity
A7: This book has really helped me to evaluate my own thinking and biases. Fighting for policy change is so important, and that’s where I plan to start! #D25forEquity
A7: My biggest take away is there cannot be change w/o action, & in order to fight systemic racism, we have to call out racism when we see it and exercise our right to vote so we can put people in power who can change policies/programs that are racist and divisive. #D25forEquity
A7 (2/2): Now, during a pandemic, pregnant at home, something I’m focusing on is how I discuss things with my own familyl. I’m reading #AntiracistBaby with my toddler and exploring how to raise antiracist children. I’ll take these steps into my classroom, too. #D25forEquity
A6: It's going to take a long time to come out of systemic racism in the US. Americans need to acknowledge that racism is everywhere. We also need to acknowledge the importance of voting! Vote for people who want to create policy against racial inequity. #D25forEquity
A5(2/2): Therefore, we must make racist power want to change their racist policies by effectively protesting. #D25forEquity
A5: Constant self-reflection can help us to recognize reasons why we might fail when doing something and can teach us how we can do better the next time. Working to change what we are doing and make it better is how we work to bring about an antiracist future #D25forEquity
A5: Understanding that one person can make the difference. Moving forward knowing you have this power and seeking out opportunities where you can use it. #D25forEquity
A5: Kendi discusses how self-critique can lead to change and that we must be flexible in order to find solutions and strategies that will work. #D25forEquity
A5: Educators have the privilege of helping to create an antiracist future. One thing we can do is push the importance of owning errors and mistakes, especially when it comes to behavior. When we are able to own it, we can learn from it. #D25forEquity
A4: We have to encourage our students to exercise their right to vote, to help them understand that their voices matter and that their actions can prompt change. #D25forEquity
A4: Find ways for our Ss to put words into actions. Share stories to encourage Ss to speak up for others and do the work. #D25forEquity
A4: A big piece of the puzzle is having courage to stand up for what is right. We need to help foster this courage in our students. #D25forEquity
A3: The first step is to have an antiracist perspective and belief that a racial group is neither superior nor inferior to another racial group. All racial groups are equal. We must then do the work of supporting antiracist policies to acquire antiracist power. #D25forEquity
A3: Groups and individuals who do have power need to join forces in confronting racism so that more antiracist policies become mainstream. #D25forEquity
A2 (1/2 ): The more we know, the better we will do. I’ve been astounded at the sheer amount of history that I simply wasn’t taught and therefore did not know. I’m doing a lot of digging this summer to correct that. #D25forEquity
A1: We can start by recognizing that 5-10% of pop. (depends on study) openly identify as LGBT. Statistically, many (if not all) will have a queer student in our classroom every year. Even if they are not out yet, it does not mean they don’t need our open support #D25forEquity
