I see people finishing their last day of med school. Congratulations! You're becoming a member of an ancient & honorable profession. You'll never be a "provider." That term was coined by govs & insurers wanting to decrease your input in the doctor-patient relationship Fight them.
For clinicians, a medical event can be routine. For patients & their families, it rips a hole in their lives. It’s been 4 years since @DGlaucomflecken’s sudden cardiac arrest. That day, the ground fell out beneath us, & months of aftershocks followed, reshaping our landscape. 1/3
The doctor-patient relationship has been held as sacred for over 2,000 years. In the US for over 30 years, it has been invaded almost at-will by corporations whose only concern is maximizing their profits. The results have been catastrophic for patients and doctors alike.
I advise friends around the world not to do what the US has done, putting profit-driven mega-corporations in charge of most health care. It has been an unmitigated disaster.
There are times when all your tests are normal but there’s still something wrong. Because there are things about health and humans we still don’t know or understand. Turns out medicine is imperfect. Just like people.

I went to the library to get a medical book on abdominal pain. Somebody had ripped the appendix out.

When you have a child & then you get crushed with the news they are disabled & all the hopes & dreams you had for them are snuffed out, you worry. When aged 17.5 they go on a work placement with lovely caring people & at the end of the week they come home with this, you cry!
Anyone who knows me is aware that I revere my Dad, who selflessly asked: “Why not me? Why should I be exempt from the floods and famines, accidents and disasters, that bedevil my brothers and sisters? By what extravagant mercy I have so far survived that to which others succumb?”
