One plus about the current state of our culture and its pull to the extremes is that most of us will never go far enough to please an unhinged public. The truth is, we become slaves to those from whom we seek approval. What a relief to just make it our aim to please God. Everything and everyone else we bow down to, no matter how benevolent the beginning, no matter what forecasts of good, will turn tyrannical. God alone can bear the burden of being God. God alone is Light and in him alone is no darkness. I have zero shame proclaiming the gospel of Christ in this day. In my opinion which, granted, is worth its weight in chicken feathers, the gospel is not only truth. It’s the sanest thing out there. Jesus saves us from ourselves from our enemy and from our brethren and sistren.

Some good news. This week all the Amazon nations vowed to end deforestation within the decade. The Amazon rainforest is home to over 3 million animal species. It stores 4x as much CO2 as the earth emits in a yr. To save ourselves. We need to save the Amazon. #ActOnClimate

Let us thank God for all the ordinary Christians who daily love their neighbors and live by faith in the resurrected Christ. They are the secret and sacred agents in the kingdom of God. The world will never know them, and it’s much better that way. They work openly, yet in secret, in small acts of self-sacrifice that subvert the reigning egocentric ethos of a world saturated with emotion and dry of truth. They consider others more important than themselves. They make it their ambition to lead quiet lives. And they raise their children to believe a life well lived is in the pursuit of serving others. They daily pray, confess their sins, and cast themselves upon the mercy of Christ. He forgives and raises them up to forgive others, to show mercy, to speak the truth in love. No one will reward them or applaud them. Nor do they seek such recognition. They are simply living as a children of God, content with his approval in Christ. Their lives are an ongoing doxology whispered in holy anonymity while passing through this dying world on the way to resurrection.

The Polish-born French-Jewish artist David Olère was deported to Auschwitz in Feb.1943. He survived selection and was put to work in the Sonderkommando, where he was forced to empty the gas chambers and burn the bodies. Olère provided testimony after the war through his drawings.
