“War college grad” is not some magical priesthood where wisdom is bestowed by a secret naval wizard standing over a map table with a pipe and a laser pointer. It is advanced professional education, not Mount Sinai. Some of the smartest strategic thinkers, combat leaders, engineers, historians, industrialists, pilots, sailors, analysts, logisticians, and statesmen in American history never attended a war college. Quite a few who did attend one still managed to preside over catastrophic failures, bad assumptions, procurement disasters, and twenty year wars with no clear end state. The strength of a republic is that citizens are allowed to have opinions about national defense because the military exists to serve the nation, not the other way around. Also, as someone who has actually spent time at the Naval War College and conducted workshops there, I can assure everyone the halls are not filled with demigods handing down sacred tablets of maritime truth. They are filled with intelligent professionals debating ideas, challenging assumptions, and occasionally trying to convince visitors that blueberry beer with floating blueberries is somehow a life changing cultural experience. It is not. It tastes like someone carbonated a muffin. Good strategy requires humility. The moment someone starts arguing that only a tiny credentialed priest class is allowed to think about war, geopolitics, logistics, or readiness, they have already lost the plot. Some of the most important strategic questions facing the United States right now involve economics, manufacturing, shipping, energy, demographics, cyber warfare, industrial capacity, culture, and political will. Those issues affect every citizen and every taxpayer. Public discussion is not only appropriate, it is necessary. If your argument cannot survive contact with ordinary intelligent people asking questions, perhaps the problem is not the public.

The problem is that it's more of a meta-cultural discussion or issue when scientists hold each other to rigorous standards at all times and they police each other for bad takes. Then, yeah, the peer review system works, at least for most mainstream science. When the system becomes corrupted over time, where there are incentives to "review" a paper that might be silly but it gets you personal benefits, then you know it becomes corrupted over time, just like any human institution actually. We found this out in my research when my thesis advisor and I weren't able to reproduce some genetic experiments. We could never figure out why it didn't work, and my guy, my advisor, was brilliant. I always wondered whether they had just faked the data.

You looked directly into the camera and said, and I am quoting this verbatim because it is the most accidentally honest thing you have ever said: "You think I'm gonna be sitting on a waiting line at United?" Senator. THAT IS OLIGARCHIC THINKING. That is TEXTBOOK "the rules apply to you people, not to me." That is the elevator music of every single billionaire you have spent 35 years pretending to oppose. In a battle of wits with your own stated beliefs, you showed up completely unarmed. Thirty-five years in Congress. You know what your personal legislative output looks like? Eight bills passed. EIGHT. In three and a half DECADES. That works out to 0.23 bills per year. I have produced more graded anatomy exams in a single semester. I am not particularly impressed by a man with three houses, $550,000 in jet receipts, and 0.23 bills per year telling me he stands with the working class. More famous than wise, Senator. Having spent a fair amount of my life around just these kind of academics, the truth is MOST of them consider themselves better than you or me or the so-called “unwashed masses.“ Did graduate school and then medical school and the overt, and sometimes unconscious elitism and paternalism was enough to turn your stomach. I had people who had never been in the military or spent any time outside of academia lecture me about what the military was “really like.”
