In a ruling that should outrage every Christian parent and believer, two federal judges appointed by Joe Biden and Barack Obama have decided that Christian schools in Maine must bow to the state’s sexual orientation and gender identity rules if they want to receive public tuition assistance. Judge Lara Montecalvo, appointed by Biden, and Judge William Kayatta, appointed by Obama, joined in a First Circuit decision that largely upheld Maine’s demands. The court told Crosspoint Church and Bangor Christian School that they cannot participate in the state’s tuition program unless they comply with LGBT nondiscrimination policies on hiring, admissions, and related matters, even when those policies directly conflict with biblical teaching on marriage and sexuality. The schools argued that forcing them to violate their religious convictions just to access a generally available benefit is unconstitutional. The Biden and Obama appointees disagreed on the core issue, leaving Christian schools with an impossible choice: compromise their faith or lose access to funding their own taxpaying families help provide. This is not neutral policy. This is targeted pressure on Christian institutions. While the court gave the schools a narrow win on one religious expression point, the broader message is clear: Christian schools are being singled out and punished for refusing to affirm LGBT ideology. First Liberty Institute has vowed to appeal, and this case is heading toward higher review. Christian parents and churches across America should be paying close attention. If this kind of ruling is allowed to stand, it opens the door for government to condition public benefits on religious schools abandoning core biblical beliefs. This is an attack on religious freedom dressed up as “nondiscrimination.” Christians are not obligated to fund or participate in the destruction of their own convictions.
