Firstly, understand where those lenses came from. When people picture Clive Lloyd, they picture the 6'5" frame, the stooped shoulders and the thick-rimmed glasses, and most assume ordinary short-sightedness. It was not. At twelve, at Chatham High School in Georgetown, Lloyd stepped in to break up a fight and was struck in the eye with a ruler. The damage was permanent. His father, a chauffeur for a local doctor, died in 1958, when Lloyd was fourteen, and by sixteen he had left school to work in the administrative section of the Georgetown hospital to support his mother and five siblings. Now the body strength that would define his batting using rudimentary weight-training equipment salvaged from a local tyre repair shop. No academy, no coaching staff, no gym but a Scrap metal from a garage. And third, that strength had a specific purpose, because Lloyd was quietly rewriting the mechanics of hitting decades before T20 made big bats normal. While his contemporaries chose lighter willow for graceful stroke play, Lloyd swung a famously heavy blade, almost unheard of in that era, and it took a genuinely powerful man to control it. Now the freakish part is what it produced at Swansea on 9 August 1976. Against Glamorgan he made 201 not out in 120 minutes, equalling Gilbert Jessop's world record for the fastest first-class double hundred. Hundred off 79 balls. Second hundred off 45. Twenty-eight fours, seven sixes, and West Indies declared on 554 for 4, scored at 6.63 an over, and won by an innings and 141 runs inside three days. One of his earliest cricket memories is of sitting in a tree outside the ground in Georgetown, overlooking the sightscreen, watching Garry Sobers score two centuries against Pakistan. The boy in the tree could barely see out of one eye, had lost his father, and was working in a hospital to feed his family. He went on to captain the greatest team the sport has ever assembled.
