Pronounced cognitive slowing with #LongCovid as compared with matched controls in a multicenter new report thelancet.com/journals/eclin… @eClinicalMed @sijiazhao92 @MasudHusain @uniof
Key simple graphic comparing objective cognitive testing results for Long Covid (PCC) individuals vs those with COVID but no chronic sequelae (no PCC) and healthy controls (No COVID)
@EricTopol @eClinicalMed @sijiazhao92 @MasudHusain @uniof FYI @sylvain_baillet, the objective cognitive speed aspect of LC is gaining attention (in contrast to the more widely discussed but more subjective 'brain fog' metaphor).
@EricTopol @eClinicalMed @sijiazhao92 @MasudHusain @uniof Interesting study but both incident cohort and controls were incompletely studied for comorbidities - the paucity of attendant disorders and lack of psychometric screening psychometrics limits broad interpretation
@EricTopol @eClinicalMed @sijiazhao92 @MasudHusain @uniof Challenging Future lies ahead. Positive signals that a very large number of people had the opportunity to get vaccinated prior to their first Covid infection, which is protective.
@EricTopol @eClinicalMed @sijiazhao92 @MasudHusain @uniof Any treatment discussion ? My mother has this
Presumably, the best control in this case would be any condition associated with ‘cognitive slowing’ though, there is not such control available. In addition both the SRT and NVT are basic measures of processing speed, which requires different elements of attention. Surely, more sophisticated testing should be performed before anyone starts claiming that a couple of 3 minute tasks are evident of cognitive slowing?! The scientific standard for Covid-19 related studies should frighten any sensible, credible scientist. Never have I ever seen such poorly designed studies, with insufficiently controlled variables, and specious claims as have been made in the Covid-19 mania!
@EricTopol @eClinicalMed @sijiazhao92 @MasudHusain @uniof Is this associated with an inflammatory issue?
@EricTopol @eClinicalMed @sijiazhao92 @MasudHusain @uniof They used two short tasks to come to the conclusion that “Covid” induced cognitive slowing. Yet they still can’t prove this is the root cause. You can’t measure someone’s cognition by using tasks that may be enjoyable to compete for some people, and for others not.
@EricTopol @eClinicalMed @sijiazhao92 @MasudHusain @uniof Vague symptoms like cognitive slowing are what brings these patients to medical attention (and are part of the diagnosis of LC). To say the symptoms are increased in LC is a circular argument!
