Don’t assume this about coming out at gay pride Christians, if someone comes out during Pride, it does not necessarily mean… 1. I don’t believe in God anymore. 2. I’m done with biblical sexual ethics. 3. I’m dating someone now. What can you usually assume it means? I’m not straight, or I don’t fit cultural gender norms in some way. Ask me more if you want to understand. Coming out publicly is rarely casual. It often follows years, sometimes decades, of private processing, fear, and discernment. Why do people come out? Because they want to be fully known and fully loved. And while sexuality is not the most important part of someone’s identity, it is still meaningful. Until it is shared, many people do not know where they will still be safe, welcomed, or loved once more of their real story is visible. Coming out can also bring real relief. It can reduce the stress of secrecy, open the door to more honest friendship, and help people find others who understand their experience. Most importantly, coming out can create space for a more honest relationship with God. So Christian, if someone comes out to you this Pride Month, don’t debate or panic or distance yourself. Do lean in. Ask good questions, listen carefully, and be safe enough for honesty. Then discern next steps based on your relationship and how they are inviting you into their life.
