Why the Midwest is currently my favorite part of the US 1) It still manufactures a lot, and that gives people good meaningful jobs that ground them to reality. The American Dream is still alive here. 2) People are not performative, with a genuineness divorced from promotion. What is the stereotype to play to? Naive, boring, sincerity with a touch of drunk? 3) and like all of the US, every city here has bunch of brew-pubs and great restaurants. The idea that you can only get lattes, home-crafted IPAs, etc, on the coasts is crazy. Everywhere in the country now has great options, especially here. 4) Oh, Great Lakes beaches are vastly under-rated 5) Culver's In praise of the Midwest, my latest piece walkingtheworld.substack.com/p/in-praise-of…

@simonsarris @Romy_Holland At the same time, in our apartment someone breaking in would need to get through 3 sets of locked doors to get into our unit… I think a house would be much easier to break into. Usually we sit with our neighbors on our stoop while baby sleeps upstairs.

@aiex_1982 @vanillaopinions Buffalo is growing, Albany has tons of civil service jobs, all of the cities have major universities and medical centers. Aside from Binghamton, most of upstate has more or less stabilized.

These Cities need to expand AND densify their metros. Give people an option to stay beyond moving states

Thanks to the logic of agglomeration economies, America's superstar cities will always centers of elite talent and the FOTB immigrants who serve them, but the middle class has moved en masse to the South and they've taken a lot of financial/social/cultural capital with them.

@cmurry1993 @SeanTrende That’s not even true. There is a bed for every person on the street in New York. Our safety net is exceedingly generous. I have worked on programs to provide housing and assistance to chronically homeless with severe mental illness. Many choose to go without, for many reasons.

This peeing on subway debate is absurd, but also depressing and frustrating. Public disorder and homelessness are huge problems in the U.S. that are especially striking when you spend any time overseas and see what an aberration it is. We are the world's richest country, and yet we have public spaces that rank in the bottom half—dirty, chaotic, and threatening. Disorder in subways should be nonexistent, not rare, and certainly not periodic. It really doesn't have to be that way. It's a choice we've made that isn't about money, but policy. NYC spends $4 billion on homeless services, and the very few people who are causing the majority of problems (they are a small percent of those who qualify for help) have options that they refuse because of mental problems, addiction, and/or both. Someone peeing on the subway is not in a right frame of mind, and isn't normal behavior, even for this population. It's a sign of distress that should cause an intervention—by police, social workers, whoever—that mandates them into an institution for a period of time, until they regain sanity. Hospital, mental ward, detox, prison, you choose, but they should not be allowed to do whatever they want. They are not sound enough to have the freedom. Someone shouting at strangers, someone shitting themselves, someone punching at the air, is also not in their right frame of mind and shouldn't—for their own safety and others—be out roaming the streets. It isn't fair to the public, especially the working people who have to deal with them on a daily basis. It isn't fair to the person themselves. The idea that it is empathetic to allow someone to roam the streets tortured by their inner demons, covered in filth, high as a kite, is so backwards and immoral that I cannot believe the activists who support it have spent any time around these people.

@bobbyfijan @ChrisRamsey60 One of my friends growing up lived on a property like this with his mom’s family and their cousins around a shared lake. The kids had their own house connected by a covered walkway to the parents’ house. One of the coolest family environments I’ve ever seen.

you either prioritize reading or you don't. You either have a book in your backpack, on your phone, or on your couch, that you can whip out and read at night, or during the small lulls in a busy life -- or you spend those moments tweeting, scrolling IG, watching cat videos, playing video games, or feeding turtles. This isn't that hard. Maybe reading is over-rated, but modern life has given everyone a luxurious amount of personal time that you can use however you want
