Tracing the Descendants of the Enslaved
Today, we are continuing our featured post, reflecting our work with descendants who have documented an ancestry specifically connected to individual(s) whose experiences were marked by captivity and some form of bondage. The template includes the names of each generation, from ancestor to descendant.
In this post, we trace the ancestry of Miguel Tórrez, the descendant of genízaro Juan Andres Munis o Chama, father of Andres Corsino, and the great great grandfather of Donaciano Medina who is pictured with his wife Maria Encarnacion Maese and their children in the center of the chart.
Juan Andres Munis, along with his brother Lucrecio, accompanied the party of the Domínguez-Escalante expedition that left Santa Fe, NM in 1776 to explore into Utah and the Colorado River Basin. He was hired as an interpreter because of his knowledge of the Ute language and of the landscape which he gained when he accompanied Juan Antonio María de Rivera in his 1765 journeys to the western area of the current US state of Colorado. When the Domínguez-Escalante party became lost in the mazes of canyons near the Colorado River, Juan Andres was amongst those who scouted and helped carve steps into the steep descent known as "Crossing of the Fathers" that is now submerged beneath Lake Powell. Although being referenced to as genízaro in Fray Silvestre Vélez de Escalante's journal, Juan Andres is recorded in other documents as mulato, and coyote, which illustrates the fluidity of documented identity and ethnicity at the time.
Two hundred and forty-eight years later, Miguel administers the New Mexico Genealogical Society DNA Project, helping to educate other descendants of their enslaved Indigenous ancestors and being deeply involved with the research surrounding Indigenous slavery in New Mexico and the south west USA.
there’s a word for exactly this feeling in the dictionary of obscure sorrows:
anemoia (n.): nostalgia for a time you’ve never known
i think we’re all feeling deep anemoia right now. the question becomes then, how we can build the world we miss, to create the era we long for.
"Family isn’t always blood, it’s the people in your life who want you in theirs: the ones who accept you for who you are, the ones who would do anything to see you smile and who love you no matter what.” #MayaAngelou
When Native American filmmaker Daniel Golding came to the Library to film a new PBS series, “Native America," he was surprised with a 100-year-old recording of his own great-grandfather singing in the Quechan language.
