@kevfly16 @ATinyGreenCell That's the dilemma. Screening for known risks misses scary-AI-bio-seqs. Blocking ambiguous / novel seqs solves AI-bio risk, but destroys R&D that leads to countermeasures.
@kevfly16 @ATinyGreenCell Exactly. Rare rejections are why it works today. Rejecting ambiguous or novel seqs before function is know makes us less safe. It prevents the discoveries that future countermeasures will depend on.
@Noahpinion Everyone agrees: bioterrorism bad. That is obvious. The problem is believing this obvious problem has a simple solution. It does not. Believing the solution is easy shows a failure of imagination, a lack of technical competence, or both.
@kevfly16 @ATinyGreenCell I was not referring to DNA prices. The price is blocking innovation. The cost is paid by society. To work, controls must block sequences of unknown biosafety. But in so doing, new vaccines, gene therapies, or synbio platforms never get explored.
@YusufSMahmood The proposal only works if EVERYONE cooperates. But terrorists won't. So now all you've done is stifle the biotech innovation needed to defend against the bad guys who don't care about your proposal.
@YusufSMahmood The problem is that countermeasures with teeth (e.g. filter ambiguous seqs) come with costs. One potential consequence: suppressing the biotech growth & innovation needed to effectively counter bio-disaster.

@OliviaHelenS Biology is intrinsically dual use. The result is paradox: the more you lock things down, the less able we are to launch new biotech startups, establish new discovery platforms, and make new medicines. By criminalizing the unknown, countless unexpected discoveries never happen.
