#16Days is an annual international campaign that kicks off on 25 November, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, and runs until 10 December, Human Rights Day #Protectiondoesntprotect
#16Days campaigns call for prevention and elimination of violence against women and girls. Not just some girls or some women. ALL girls and ALL women from every corner of this world. #Protectiondoesntprotect
According to @UN ,VAW and girls with disabilities is a significant issue that is related to both gender & disability based discrimination and exclusion. Combined, these two factors result in an extremely high risk of violence #16Days #ProtectionDoesntProtect
Why do we need to listen attentively to #WWDs globally ,during this year's #16Days? The reasons are many: 1. Data shows that there is a higher rate of violence against WWDs than against MWDs 2. GBV of WWDs far exceeds that of women without disabilities. #ProtectionDoesntProtect
3.Perpetrators are caregivers 4. According to @UNDP , just 1% of WWDs are literate. This means WWDs are likely trapped by violent partners or family members because they are financially and socially dependent on them for survival #16DaysofActivism2021 #Protectiondoesntprotect
5. Cos of stigma associated with reporting SGBV, and sometimes perpetrators are family, the presence of an accompanying family member may discourage women from coming forward. #16DaysofActivism2021 #Protectiondoesntprotect #DisabilityTwitter
Forced sterilization, physical, psychosocial, economic includes but not limited to the forms of abuse that WWDs go through. Not to forged sexual violence that is prevent and thrives because of the silence. Break the silence! #16Days #protectiondoesntprotect
What can be done ? 1. Listen to WWDs. 2. Fund WWDs led organizations (less that 2% of world aid go to disability led NGOs) 3. Make safe houses accessible and available 4. Explore intersectionality deeply to ensure that the complexities of VAW against WWDs are addressed.
We need to shift from protectionist policies as people with rights do not need protection. What they need is leadership that allow the to be free from violence, and access to timely information. They also need to be heard as they are not Voiceless #16Days #protectiondoesntprotect

That women with disabilities cannot lead is a false perception. In Ke for instance , the @Covid19PWDsKe was about 90% women with disabilities led and we managed to reach over 100,000 and attract resources from @Amref_Worldwide @UNFPAKen @kenyapipeline @OpenSociety among others

According to @UN ,VAW and girls with disabilities is a significant issue that is related to both gender & disability based discrimination and exclusion. Combined, these two factors result in an extremely high risk of violence #16Days #ProtectionDoesntProtect
Why do we need to listen attentively to #WWDs globally ,during this year's #16Days? The reasons are many: 1. Data shows that there is a higher rate of violence against WWDs than against MWDs 2. GBV of WWDs far exceeds that of women without disabilities. #ProtectionDoesntProtect
3.Perpetrators are caregivers 4. According to @UNDP , just 1% of WWDs are literate. This means WWDs are likely trapped by violent partners or family members because they are financially and socially dependent on them for survival #16DaysofActivism2021 #Protectiondoesntprotect
5. Cos of stigma associated with reporting SGBV, and sometimes perpetrators are family, the presence of an accompanying family member may discourage women from coming forward. #16DaysofActivism2021 #Protectiondoesntprotect #DisabilityTwitter
Forced sterilization, physical, psychosocial, economic includes but not limited to the forms of abuse that WWDs go through. Not to forged sexual violence that is prevent and thrives because of the silence. Break the silence! #16Days #protectiondoesntprotect
What can be done ? 1. Listen to WWDs. 2. Fund WWDs led organizations (less that 2% of world aid go to disability led NGOs) 3. Make safe houses accessible and available 4. Explore intersectionality deeply to ensure that the complexities of VAW against WWDs are addressed.
We need to shift from protectionist policies as people with rights do not need protection. What they need is leadership that allow the to be free from violence, and access to timely information. They also need to be heard as they are not Voiceless #16Days #protectiondoesntprotect
