The size of the tornado by width does not determine the rating. Also if you’re hoping for an EF-5. You’re seriously fucked in your brain housing group. Get some help.
A reminder too that ratings are irrelevant to the families who lost homes. These tornadoes have human impacts, and while ratings are valuable from a data standpoint, people and human impact are far more important than numbers.
@Jacob_Feuer Agreed; every EF5 in memory it seems has had at least one or two damage photos that emerge within which it’s just overwhelmingly clear.
@xoEspy @JordanHallWX This is a solid counterpoint. The EF scale has always been a damage assessment scale. It’s very possible we’ve seen 200+ mph EF4s in the past that were not measured! If you want to go straight off wind, maybe we consider a new scale

@hebrooks87 @JordanHallWX Also, radars measure doppler velocity of scatterers in the volume, not the actual air flow velocity. Turbulent motions within the resolution volume also cause large standard deviations (spectrum width) of estimates, so estimates are still estimates.
There is a considerable difference between “was an EF-5” and “had EF-5 strength winds”. Our field is about communication, and verbiage like this that contradicts what could come from the NWS only causes confusion.
Screaming into the void again: tornado ratings do not matter when lives were destroyed. Salivating over the end of the “EF4 drought” in Oklahoma or screaming about how the “EF5 drought” still stands is immature, heartless, and disgusting. Do better.
Since the dreaded "ERMERGERD THERE WAS A TORNADO THAT SHOULD BE RATED EF5" rant is happening on Twitter today, I'm just gonna show you what Grif said to me at the end of the Rolling Fork Interview and leave it at that. It explains my feelings better than any thread could.
The purpose of what I'm getting at here is that one can debate the ratings all they want, but it's the least important part of what tornadoes do. The rating debates are nothing more than nerd stuff. What is more pressing at hand are the people who lost everything.

The Harlan, Iowa tornado had winds up to 224 mph. Will it get an EF-5 rating? Probably not. Considerations: • Were those winds at the ground? • Over how small an area did those winds act? • Was there a structure there? • Would structure have failed in lesser winds? [1/2]
