I am holding a department meeting tomorrow and our CPD focus is going to be on big ideas in literature. I have seen lots on Twitter recently but not can’t find the posts. Could anyone point me in the direction of them? Thank you in advance. @Team_English1 #teamenglish
🌟Students need a sentence structure to show their understanding that big ideas are connected to little moments.🌟🧵 I talk a lot about micro and macro. Everything we read and write moves between big & small; small & big. Being able to access the big idea is important. 1/10
Yes, but there’s a corridor somewhere with rules on a poster.
Help please @Team_English1 we’re looking for a challenging book for our Year 7s to read over the summer before they join us. The first novel they read with us is Boys Don’t Cry and lots of them read other suggestions I’ve seen in Year 6. Would be so grateful for your suggestions
The 40 finest edu-threads from the last 4 months: (a mere glimpse of the vast intellectual talent alive across our profession) ↓
I conducted my own action research to ask 'how effective can #knowledgeorganisers be when used as a targeted intervention tool in English?'. 🔍 LOTS went into this. Anyway, to save you the trouble, the answer is that they improved outcomes by 20%. 🙌 #researchED 🧠 #ukedchat
What's your favourite text to teach at year 7 and why? @Team_English1
Analysing structure to identify some of the more subtle choices made by the writer 🔍After re-framing the question and a productive class discussion, the understanding was much stronger 💪
THREAD: Here’s various resources for Macbeth. You can access them in the Dropbox link at the end of the thread. First up, ‘Postcards from the Dead’: a collaboration between @amymayforrester @heymrshallahan and myself. I contributed the Macbeth content
I've adapted how I use structure strips and tried it with Q4 for Language OCR. It has given them reassurance and freedom to go their own way. I've attached the link to the resource here in case it can help anyone in the final weeks for Y11: dropbox.com/scl/fi/o7yviwf…
- 10 model essays for 'Power and Conflict' poetry - Our very popular and effective 'Why that method' sheets - Our Topic Guide with full list of Big Ideas - Our poetry planning sheet - Real examiner-marked scripts from 2022, ranging from Grade 4 to Grade 9 missjohnston.com/blog/5-ways-we…
This week’s department meeting was centred around presenting changes to our Power and Conflict scheme including scheme of work outline, Big Ideas and Key Vocab (Credit to @Miss_GJohnston 👌🏼) and reviewing our three key quotations for each poem 🤩 Can’t wait to teach it ⭐️
Revising with Y11? Here is a suggested approach, one I have used successfully for some time. Not saying it's the only approach, or the right one. Do what works for you, of course but...if you want a direction... (& resources included for @Team_English1) laurawebbcpd.com/2024/04/06/a-c…
@FunkyPedagogy @AlexJQuigley How to teach or just spelling or more generally? On the latter I'd highly recommend Anika Okrent's Highly Irregular and David Crystal's Spell it Out for engaging introductions to English spellings.
What’s the best book to read on spellings??? I feel like I have significant unknown unknowns… 👀 @Suchmo83 @AlexJQuigley
The worse the resources, the more teachers should be allowed the freedom to modify, skip, or just ignore. The better the resources, the more teachers should use the materials as intended, or risk diluting what made the resources effective. This still doesn't erase T personality.
Following on from yesterday's post, here are our Big Ideas in a bigger format so you can read them. Any feedback is appreciated!
People who use Frayer models, is there value in giving a complete one or is it preferable to help students make their own? @Team_English1 @lamb_heart_tea

Hello teachers. Would you find it useful for me to create a thread of some key incel terminology? Might help you: A) Better understand the threat the manosphere poses B) be better able to listen out for signs that students are accessing misogynistic content online.
Yes, but there’s a corridor somewhere with rules on a poster.

Gerald being the ABSOLUTE WORST is a hill that I will DIE on
@Bowtie_pedagogy @AlwaysLearnWeb I agree with your point! I find in interesting that Priestley presents the Inspector as having a little sympathy for both Gerald and Eric (and indeed Sheila) - it is perhaps the modern audience who despises Gerald, whereas I feel Priestley's sights are very much on Mr & Mrs B.
@Bowtie_pedagogy @QuotationBank He lies by omission, keeps her locked up, ensures she is grateful, does nothing to help her get back on feet even though daddy has biggest company, & pays her off when he's done with her. The power imbalance is enough to make sure she agrees to anything. Gerald is the worst!
@AlwaysLearnWeb I totally understand Gerald hate, but it has to be Eric: he's a rapist. He admits "I insisted." His excuse? He was in a "state". His biggest regret? "I didn't even remember". Because of Eric, an unborn child is bleached to death. They are all horrific, but Eric is the worst.
