@UnofficialOA I’m gen x, but I’m learning from them. 8 ‘til 5 and that’s your lot. I’ll do the odd bit of weekend work at the end of the year when reports are due - otherwise I have family and hobbies.
@MillieKarma @UnofficialOA Just because a tradition has "always been done this way" doesn't mean it's right. Good for your colleagues for keeping firm life balance boundaries! I love my profession as well, I applaud the changes, I'm old too and following their lead. It's been life changing for me!
@MillieKarma @UnofficialOA This, "we are in this for the student's" CAN become really toxic. Remember getting a p8 of 0.5 (up from 0.2) and the exec came to tell s that we weren't doing enough for the kids. I walked.
@MillieKarma @UnofficialOA If your school needs teachers to come in at Easter for revision, then you should rethink the curriculum plan. If it can’t get done in school time, the curriculum is the problem not the teachers. It’s toxic to blame staff.
@MillieKarma @UnofficialOA I'm sorry too because it doesn't have to be this way. Teacher wellbeing is as important as student wellbeing because the two are inextricable.
@UnofficialOA 😱 In the research I’m conducting with ECTs now, I have to say they have some superb colleagues who have helped them with professional short cuts and being more realistic about teaching expectations. I love this - real camaraderie!
I always find it interesting how some people talk education & badge themselves as experts but have 5 seconds of experience or none at all. There’s a massive difference between theorising/talking & actually doing it.
@UnofficialOA This observation is so important! On tough days, I used to get a colleague to sign me out later and, at 4.30pm, walk across the field, around the back of the school to the car park. Because it was dirty looks and passive aggressive confrontation if you left before 5.30-6pm.

@UnofficialOA If it can't be done by 5, it'll be done the next day. I prioritize deadlines, and everything else gets done within the hours of 8-5 👍🏻

@AlisKJones @UnofficialOA Gen X here too. Over the last few years I've been doing it more and more. Apart from exceptional situations: If I'm not being paid to work, I dont work. If Its impossible to make a deadline in the hours I'm paid to work, then the deadline is the problem, not me.
@UnofficialOA @MillieKarma Many Gen Z teachers, including my relative, are also doing 2 jobs and work in most holidays to pay their rent or mortgages.

@MillieKarma @UnofficialOA Why should they do Easter revision? I didn’t have Easter revision when I was at school…! If people are happy to then great - it’s a lovely bonus - but no one should ever be compelled to work in their holidays.
@MillieKarma @UnofficialOA Easter revision isn’t traditional! It’s literally the opposite of traditional! It started in the last 20-30 years.

@MillieKarma @UnofficialOA I don't agree with your pendulum metaphor. There is less goodwill from young staff BECAUSE leaders, generally, aren't looking after or valuing their teachers' time. If we're talking swinging pendulums, the only truth is that leaders have swung too far towards toxic management.
