As with original publication in @NewStatesman, I’m overwhelmed by the response: both the levels of kindness shown to me, & the horror that so many other women have gone through. The stories I’ve read have bordered on barbaric - from friends & strangers alike. It has to stop. X

The mad thing is I never wanted to be in hospital a second longer than I had to be so I was basically pushing within minutes of being there. Always wanted a water birth. Always too late to fill the pool

I wish I'd had the nerve to say "why has it come as a surprise to you that my waters have indeed broken given I'm 9 months pregnant and I just fucking told you my waters had broken. Left me sat in corridor outside the assessment unit with water still running out of me. Examined me. 7cm. Pushing five mins later.
@juliahobsbawm @helenlewis There's a real "don't get above yourself" attitude towards women in labour, as if you're not scared enough already
@helenlewis @glosswitch When I had my daughter - born 01.01.01 -I had complications and was induced. The midwives were openly hostile thinking it was a planned New Year induction. When Labour actually started after 24 hours and I told them they laughed and carried on talking at the nurses station.
@helenlewis @glosswitch My body remembered (second baby) what actual Labour felt like so I waddled up to nurses station after a hot bath and told them. "Do you hear that, Cherie?" I was mocked. "She thinks she's in Labour". Five hours later daughter born.
@glosswitch I think maternity units are particularly bad for this. I’ve heard so many stories of midwives shaming mothers for not being able to control labour — its timing, its progression, their own bodily reaction, their pain threshold.
@helenlewis With my second, I followed the advice on when to come in, as if I was getting a bit ahead of myself, then later heard my own birth story was being used as a "cautionary example" of women who leave it too late and give birth on the way

All of @hannahsbee’s piece on birth trauma (in the NS, and now today’s Times) is brilliant. But this little thing stood out to me, because it’s an experience I’ve had in the NHS too — being given bad or contradictory instructions and then being scolded for following them:
