The report demonstrates that parent engagement improves the quality of reviews. Starting in January 2024, the PMRT collaboration will offer online training for review teams to improve parent engagement. @TIMMSleicester @NPEU_Oxford @mbrrace
The PMRT report highlights that multi-disciplinary group reviews are essential and that PMRT review teams must be adequately resourced with administrative support and an independent external panel member. @TIMMSleicester @NPEU_Oxford @mbrrace
Over 19 out of 20 reviews identified areas for improvement. 4 in 20 reviews identified at least one issue with care that may have made a difference to the outcome for the baby. @TIMMSleicester @NPEU_Oxford @mbrrace
The PMRT report has also highlighted some of the comments, questions, and concerns raised by parents during the review process. @TIMMSleicester @NPEU_Oxford @mbrrace
Just 14% of PMRT action plans developed as a result of a baby’s death were judged to be ‘strong’. An example of a ‘strong’ action plan is the implementation of a new IT system to improve routine investigations as it is designed to eliminate human error. @mbrrace @TIMMSleicester
Most parents had a follow-up meeting with their consultant to review their care, but not all had a personalised letter summarising what they talked about. Asian and Black parents were less likely to receive a letter than White parents. @TIMMSleicester @NPEU_Oxford @mbrrace
Almost all baby deaths were reviewed using the PMRT. Hospital reviews were more positive than the conclusions of the confidential enquiry panels. When a review did take place, most parents didn’t have any questions , especially if they didn’t speak English. @TIMMSleicester
Blood tests to check for gestational diabetes were not offered to 1 in 5 Asian women and 1 in 3 Black women. Almost all White women who should have been tested were offered a test. @TIMMSleicester @NPEU_Oxford @mbrrace

Last week we took our Listening Project report on the experiences of Black and Asian parents whose baby died before, during or shortly after birth to a meeting of the @APPGBabyLoss looking at inequalities in baby loss with colleagues from @mbrrace, @CareQualityComm and @RCObsGyn.
The report highlighted how it is essential that staff have the skills and knowledge to listen to parents, provide good communication, conduct personalised risk assessments and support parents to contribute to reviews and investigations in order to eliminate these inequalities.
NEW: Maternal death rates in the UK have increased to levels not seen since 2003-05. Key findings by an investigation led by @Oxford_NDPH ⬇️
Dr Nicola Vousden @nvousden, co-chair of the new FPH Women's Health SIG, shared her views on the latest maternal mortality figures in the UK published in this report by @mbrrace. x.com/fph/status/174…
"Ethnic and socioeconomic inequalities highlighted in today's @mbrrace report indicate that we must address the underlying structures that impact health before, during and after pregnancy, such as housing, education and healthy environments“ @nvousden - FPH Women's Health SIG
Latest UK maternal mortality figures released today. The maternal death rate in 2020-22 was 13.41 per 100,000 maternities. This is significantly 53% higher than the rate of 8.79 deaths per 100,000 maternities in the previous three year period (2017-19). buff.ly/3HfFpCO
Today’s @mbrrace data showing a rise in maternal deaths is very worrying and adds to the overwhelming body of evidence that improving maternity safety for all needs to be at the top of the Government’s agenda. Read our full response➡️sands.org.uk/sands-responds… We know that news…

@mbrrace While focus must remain on the disparities between ethnic groups it is also crucial to investigate why & how women in poorer areas suffer far worse maternal outcomes - and turn the tide of inequity for all parents @NHSEngland @NCTcharity
@mbrrace @Marianfknight "The maternal death rate for 2020-22 remains significantly higher than the rate in 2017-2019 even when COVID-19 deaths are excluded". This is further evidence of a worrying direction of travel. Addressing these trends remains a matter of urgency @mbrrace @Marianfknight
