BITCOIN RAILS #71: Expecting Hardforks | with Drivechains author Paul Sztorc
🔗 YouTube: youtu.be/XuN9GrqS6NI
🌿 Spotify: open.spotify.com/episode/5492Ui…@Truthcoin founder and CEO of LayerTwo Labs and author of Bitcoin Improvement Proposals 300 and 301 (Drivechains), has been one of Bitcoin's most persistent—and controversial—thinkers, advocating for merge-mined sidechains as a way to dramatically expand Bitcoin's functionality while preserving the security of the base layer.
Following our previous episode introducing his proposed Bitcoin hard fork, eCash, we discuss how the project has evolved in recent months, what to expect when the fork launches on mainnet, and Paul's perspectives on today's Layer 2 landscape and the soon-to-activate BIP 110 soft fork.
An entertaining, popcorn-style conversation with one of Bitcoin's most unconventional thinkers, this episode offers diverse—and at times irreverent—commentary on some of the most important technical debates shaping Bitcoin's future.
This episode of Bitcoin Rails is brought to you by:
LayerTwo Labs @LayerTwoLabs — developing research, software, and technologies for scaling Bitcoin via the integration of Drivechains (BIP 300/301)
Hashi on @SuiNetwork — a primitive for executing Bitcoin DeFi transactions, without having to trust a federated bridge or other centralized entity
BitBox @BitBoxSwiss — an open-source Bitcoin-only hardware wallet, with smooth UX and no compromises on security. Check out Bitbox [dot] swiss and use code BITCOINRAILS to get a discount

“What immediately separates this fork from the failed BIP-110 fiasco earlier this month is the mining support. ECX is clearly attracting more miners willing to put actual hashrate behind the chain.”
Shout out to @BitcoinCom for the coverage.

Developers that want to bring functionality to Bitcoin are met with painful soft fork debates that can take years.
L1 ossification protects the monetary base, but it keeps builders blocked in.
With Drivechains, anyone can build a sidechain, and if it succeeds, Bitcoin gains new utility and transaction fee revenue; if it breaks or fails, L1 remains completely unaffected and safe.
Oct 31 -- the official, permanent eCash launch (ECX).
Aug 23 -- the Alpha launch , of "practice ECX" (pECX).
What will ECX be worth? Well, no one knows for sure.
However, we do have a clue -- from solana.
In our Sol Token giveaway (links below), roughly $75k has been sent in. This has already been redeemed for about 2,500 ECX (and 2500 pECX).
If you divide the sol-marketcap, $266k by 2.5k, you get $ 106.4 .
That would put ECX at //half// the marketcap of BCH, and ranked #35th on coinmarketcap -- roughly the same as UniSwap.
Practice makes perfect. This Sunday -- we will also be able to practice allowing the Sol-Token owners to utilize the memecoin to get real pECX. Hopefully we work out all the kinks, so that the Oct delivery goes as smooth as possible.
More updates coming soon.

With the first phase of the eCash (ECX) hard fork just a week away, eCash founder @Truthcoin sat down with the economist who arguably set his career in motion: @robinhanson
An hour-long conversation on prediction markets, futarchy, Bitcoin, and the core ideas behind eCash.
Worth a listen. 👇

Crypto spent a decade inventing new tokens, new validator sets, new foundations, new governance systems, and new trusted bridges.
Apparently letting Bitcoin have optional sidechains was the radical idea.
Day 6 of posting @Truthcoin metaphors every day until $ECX forks
Bitcoin scaling as medieval fee serfdom where rich people cram into a tiny tower with giant longbows while the plebs, priced out of a gate that takes a century to clear, get slaughtered in the field
We already spend the hashpower. Why should it only secure one thing?
Bitcoin miners perform an enormous amount of proof-of-work to secure Bitcoin.
Merged mining asks a deceptively simple question:
Can that same work also contribute to securing other chains?
Not “split the hashpower.”
Not “stop mining Bitcoin.”
Not “replace Bitcoin’s consensus.”
Reuse work that is already being performed.
That changes the economics of the design space.
Instead of every new blockchain bootstrapping its own token, validator set and security budget from zero, specialized chains can exist alongside Bitcoin while miners gain another potential source of fees.
One mining economy.
Multiple independent execution environments.
Different rules. Different applications. Different tradeoffs.
The strange part isn’t that miners might want to monetize their existing infrastructure more efficiently.
The strange part is spending fifteen years building the most formidable proof-of-work infrastructure on Earth and then deciding:
“Nobody better find another use for this.”

The weirdest assumption in Bitcoin:
Every new idea must either become part of Bitcoin, or leave Bitcoin entirely.
There's a third option: sidechains.
Keep the money.
Keep the base layer.
Expand the design space.
UPDATE: eCash is launching in three phases. Final release on Bitcoin's 18th Birthday.
eCash is launching in three phases, a 12-week live testing and validation period that rewards early participants, drives real price discovery, and gives exchanges, wallets, and developers time to integrate before ECX becomes permanent.
Phase 1 — Alpha: ~Aug 23, 2026 Block 963,648. The fork activates. Every BTC holder receives practice ECX (pECX) 1:1 at the August 23 snapshot and can begin trading, splitting, and testing the network in a live environment.
Phase 2 — Beta: ~Sep 20, 2026 Block 967,680. The network matures as exchanges, wallets, and developers integrate. Real-world activity drives price discovery. pECX holders can begin burning for real ECX. Conversion details to follow.
Phase 3 — Full Release: ~Oct 31, 2026 Block 973,728. A second snapshot captures BTC holders for the permanent ECX distribution. The rehearsal ends. ECX becomes permanent and fully tradeable.
October 31st is exactly 18 years since Satoshi published the Bitcoin whitepaper. A fitting date.
Why three phases:
• Rewards early participants who show up before the crowd
• Gives exchanges, wallets, and developers time to integrate properly
• Allows real price discovery before the permanent release
• Puts the network through its paces in a live environment
• Surfaces issues while there's still time to address them
• Gives the ecosystem a real-world demo rather than a theoretical FAQ
What stays the same:
• Every BTC holder receives ECX
• Your BTC is untouched
• Exchange listing campaign still active: ecash.com/list-ecx
The network starts August 23. The permanent release comes October 31.
You have 12 weeks to practice.
The August 2017 Bitcoin Cash (BCH) fork is the closest analog to the eCash fork.
Not every exchange credited users at the snapshot, and the ones that didn’t took months to reverse course under user pressure.
Refusing to credit BTC holders is a choice, and it’s one their users notice.
