Not often you can get the newspaper to do a victim shot because somebody put a note in your letterbox offering you $3m smh.com.au/national/nsw/g…
What a ridiculous premise. The Royal Exhibition Building is surrounded by a 26-hectare park, and these people are saying the sight of a tall building IN THE CBD undermines the integrity of the heritage site? theage.com.au/national/victo…
The Royal Exhibition Building commentary is well-timed, as the @cityofmelbourne is currently consulting on their Heritage Strategy. The city already has 12,867 heritage-protected properties. We think the question should be asked: what exactly could make no. 12,868 significant?
The housing they’re cooking up in Iran puts a lot of what’s being built in Sydney and Melbourne to shame. This looks so nice

One of last night’s housing town hall attendees did so after having being evicted that same day, and finding he could no longer afford to stay in the inner west. He also endured the brunt of the rude planner at the end who was yelling at him that he didn’t deserve to live here.
Brisbane YIMBYs and housing enthusiasts! This is happening in exactly one week. The housing crisis affects everyone, and we need grassroots activists in every state to make this movement a success. We need YOU. eventbrite.com.au/e/710042374857…

Even if a local council cared about affordability (some do, some do not) they can do little about it, acting alone. Extra supply would just attract people from nearby LGAs. So the increase needs to be co-ordinated/imposed by the State government through higher housing targets.

The government claims to be boosting housing construction. Instead, it is falling. That reflects a lack of meaningful policy action. They only deliver rhetoric and symbolism.

Alright, after some chat about decentralisation last night, How Canberra Became The Worst City for Transport in Australia Due to Urban Planner Driven Decentralisation, a thread. To begin with, this is Canberra - a city ~40kms long and ~25kms wide, pop ~474,000 or so.
still think this is one of the funniest YIMBY tweets of all time. it pops into my head almost daily.
The Purge begins. Everything is legal for twelve hours. I immediately approve permits on a twelve story apartment building in south Berkeley
I still cannot get over how offensive the amount of surface car parking right next to our amazing national institutions is.

Unfortunately this kind of vertical extension would be prohibited on heritage buildings in Melbourne

Great news, let's see if the momentum continues. Not sure about following the NSW model though, ACT or straight-swap seems like a much better way to go.
Victorian home buyers would be given the option of paying annual land taxes instead of upfront stamp duty as part of a package of proposed reforms to tackle housing affordability and strengthen the state’s tax base. theage.com.au/national/victo…

Thanks everybody for turning up today at the YIMBY Melbourne Workshop! We had a fantastic time meeting you all, and it's so encouraging to see so much energy and excitement with supporting more housing!
Wonderful news. The ALP has a serious plan for reducing the cost of housing. smh.com.au/national/nsw/l…
Great article on the New Zealand planning reforms. "backlash is coming chiefly from well-off residents in leafy suburbs, as well as heritage conservationists who argue the changes will destroy the character of neighbourhoods"
Weekend read: New Zealand's planning and housing density reforms give Sydney something to consider smh.com.au/national/nsw/c…
@AusYimby @MrSteveDriscoll Phil Lowe is incorrect that "we don't want to live in high density". Judging by the prices buyers pay, there is enormous demand to live in high density. But zoning doesn't permit it. He should have said "we don't want others to live in high density"
Some friends are trying to add a 2nd story to their inner city house. 18 months later they have yet to lay a brick and are still waiting for council approval. Last week the boomer neighbours (objecting vociferously of course) asked if they wouldn’t just prefer to move suburbs 😐
Hi. This is bad design. Banning even mild development within 1 kilometre of the CBD is counter-intuitive and makes infrastructure costs more expensive as new housing stock has to be on the suburban fringe
