i’ve seen so many people calling for prosecution of captain and crew of that ship when everything points to them actually saving a lot of lives by getting the mayday call out in time. we really live in such a punitive society

if you blame individuals instead of the local, national, and global infrastructure that is badly maintained and overloaded, you are going to have a very miserable rest of your life as more and more accidents occur without any reform of the systems until the seas swallow us
@zoenone0none Getting a mayday call out on time works if there weren't cars ON THE BRIDGE WHEN IT WAS HIT. Trust me, nobody keeps driving forward when a bridge collapses in front of them. That was the real mayday call. All their maydays did was get an emergency response a few minutes sooner.
@zoenone0none The captain and crew of non-local ships aren’t allowed to navigate in the shipping channels here. Baltimore harbor uses local pilots to navigate out to open water. Very likely two Baltimore pilots were at the helm when this tragedy occurred.
@zoenone0none People blindly assume that every vehicle is like their car and therefore don’t understand that even doing an emergency stop on a ship that big would require something around 5 miles to actually get the thing to stop.
@zoenone0none everyone wants to assign blame, but the truth is sometimes accidents just happen very similar to the saying 'you can do everything right and still lose'
@zoenone0none @RealGayArbys Bingo. Contrast that with concordia's captain trying to bail. Dali's captain is going to have nightmares for life and will forever question today.
@zoenone0none Nevermind the fact that captain and crew had nothing to do with driving the boat! Its driven by harbor pilots.
@zoenone0none I mean, the US Navy prosecuted a captain for the actions of his subordinates (his first mate was in charge that night and disobeyed an order, resulting in a collision and crew deaths) and he was incapacitated due to an injury caused by the collision...
@zoenone0none @apoolhallace They called in that mayday at the first sign of trouble. Absolutely saved dozens of lives by doing so. We all saw how fast the bridge collapsed. Every second mattered between that call and Port Authority having time to shut it down.
