The hackers culture was a lot about freedom of speech and no dogmas. I think this in part is lost forever, and it is sad.
Another thing is that there is surely a cultural shift in the programming world. Hacking was associated with open-mindedness in the past
In the past even in the worst flame there was some kind of argument debated. On twitter you can simply insult in 140 chars, free of context
One thing is, how bad Twitter can be, compared to the flame wars we saw in the past via usenet / mailing lists.
Dudes all this flame war was extremely useful for me, I understand a few things that will be useful for me in the future.

@crucially you have really no idea about what free speech is if you think that as long as the blog post is up, this is free speech.
@crucially yes, as I received many rage-replies that were not arguments, including things like "you should not have children" or alike.
@crucially because the reactions of yesterday were not counter arguments, but in many cases denigratory suppression of freedom.
