Superflu: Vigilance Against a Spreading Threat By Dr. Tony Leachon Flu cases are surging nationwide, with many linked to Influenza A virus type H3N2, subclade K. This strain is being described as the “super flu” because of how quickly it is spreading and how intense and prolonged symptoms feel for many patients. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), influenza activity is already high in several East Coast states, particularly New York, and continues to rise across the country. So far this season, there have been an estimated 7.5 million illnesses, 81,000 hospitalizations, and 3,100 deaths attributed to influenza. The subclade K variant accounts for the majority of confirmed cases nationwide, underscoring the need for vigilance and preventive action. While the term “superflu” may sound alarming, it is important to clarify: this variant does not cause more severe disease than other flu strains, nor does it escape the protection offered by seasonal vaccines. What it does have are mutations that may make it more transmissible. The evidence is not yet conclusive, since factors like an early start to flu season and low vaccine uptake also drive higher case numbers. Still, the reality is clear: cases are rising, symptoms are lingering, and vigilance is necessary. The good news is that vaccines remain effective in reducing severe disease. If you received your flu shot within the past year, you still carry substantial protection. For those who haven’t, the Southern Hemisphere vaccine should be available by February, and in the Philippines we receive both Northern and Southern Hemisphere formulations six months apart. Remember: you only need one flu shot per year, so take it when available. In the meantime, we already know the tools that work: • Wear a mask 😷, especially if you are vulnerable or live with someone elderly or immunocompromised. • Stay home if you develop flu symptoms to protect others. • Consult your doctor if you get sick, and proceed to the ER if you experience warning signs such as shortness of breath or oxygen saturation at or below 94% on room air. This is not a new pandemic. We have the tools to prevent and treat it. But the lesson of the “superflu” is clear: health is wealth, and ignoring the basics of prevention can cost us dearly. Let us meet this challenge with calm resolve, discipline, and compassion. Spread wisdom, not fear.
