According to a recent study,more than 250K people in the US die every year because of medical mistakes, making it the third leading cause of death after heart disease and cancer. Do we need more regulations? How about we just stop going to hospitals that kill a lot of people?

Walgreens has agreed to pay $262M to settle claims they defrauded Medicare and Medicaid. The pharmacy billed for insulin pens it distributed to people who didn't need them,and over-charged for other drugs. This is part of the gov'ts crack-down on overcharging for meds.#healthcare

In his book Catastrophic Care, David Goldhill reports US health insurance companies employ half a million people. That's one insurance worker for every 2 doctors. Said another way, we spend half as much time administrating care as we spend delivering it. #healthcare

More primary-care doctors work directly for hospitals, and they are being pushed to keep lucrative referrals in-house. There may not be anything wrong with this. Just know its happening and you should do your own referral research. #healthcare

Drug companies are hiking the prices on more than 1000 meds for 2019. The average price increase is 6%, which is 3 times the U.S. inflation rate. The increases are in anticipation of the Trump administration implementing their plan to decrease drug prices. Let the games begin!

Starting 1/1/19 US hospitals are required to publish their prices online, and in a form that can be processed by computers. This is a medicare mandate. Let's see how many comply. There are flaws in the details, but a definite a step toward price transparency in US healthcare.

Did you hear a federal judge ruled on Friday that the ACA's individual coverage mandate is unconstitutional and that the rest of the law therefore cannot stand? What's that mean to us? Not much in 2019. The ruling will be appealed. It will probably end up in the SCOTUS. Again.

Make no mistake. You are the primary stakeholder in your health care. If you are ill or injured, you are the primary sufferer. Make sure you have a plan for your care. Blaming the government, while therapeutic, is not a healthcare plan characterized by personal accountability.
