🧵No one has shown more enthusiasm for murderous economic sanctions than the corporate media. And amidst this disgraceful lot, @Reuters always manages to stand out for its mix of faux sophistication and blatant lying in defense of US imperialism. Follow our thread
The article: tinyurl.com/mr2akmup It's about the US' non-renewal of a license allowing *certain* oil transactions (more on this later) but you can tell where it's going from the headline. Apparently it's up to the US to decide whether there is "progress" in Vzlan elections
Opening salvo of lies. The license did not "widely ease" sanctions, it only allowed for Vzla to sell w/o significant discounts and intermediaries. As for the "free and fair election" commitments, they'll either go unspecified (i.e. take the US' word for it) or be blatantly false
Just look at how the media establishment casually talks about imperialist mobster antics. The Biden admin wants the Maduro govt to "make enough concessions" to "meet US demands" otherwise it will ramp up coercive measures and kill tens more thousands of civilians #SanctionsKill
Beyond disgraceful to flat-out lie like this. The agreement said all parties could pick their candidates *provided they were legally allowed to run*. It's really spelled out. Then there was an appeals process agreed to by both parties, and an appeal can by definition be denied
Another casual endorsement of mobster antics, w/ the extra corporate media lie that sanctions "punish" Maduro and his gov't. From UN agencies to multilateral organizations, even House members, it's beyond established that sanctions hurt civilians and work as collective punishment
Though it inflicts short-term pain, it's ironic that Washington actually undermines the US dollar hegemony. And also, how on Earth are foreign customers going to execute transactions in Venezuela's domestic currency w/o paying for it w/ some foreign currency? 🤔
Instead of just relying on the US-appointed candidate's opinion, any self-respecting journalist would explain why the Supreme Court upheld her ban. Also, there are 12 opposition candidates. Just because they are not outspoken US puppets doesn't make them any less "opposition"
This is a movie we've seen before. The US is ramping up the mass murder of Venezuelans b/c it doesn't like its surrogates' prospects in an upcoming election. And the corporate media, already oiled up from its genocide support, will cheer it on every step of the way #SanctionsKill
