Many parts of dealing with diabetic retinopathy have been really tough but among the worst was when I was led back out to the lobby- eyes in pain from injections, barely able to see at the moment, upset at the slow progress- and the desk lady asks me for 900 dollars on the spot.

@tyberinger I’ve done a lot of advocacy work over the years on Capitol Hill and the progress is slow but I’m hopeful. As I said, Medicare has really broadened there covg, as have private carriers. It’s slow but at least moving in the right direction.

@tyberinger I hear you re the prices not coming down but access has improved via Medicare covg and broadened insurance covg for more diabetics and more choice of devices (not to mention increased tech compatibility). I’m naturally skeptical too, but it’s happening, albeit slowly.

People often justify refusing my Guide Dog access on the basis of potential fear of dogs. But how does it work when someone is scared & we’re sharing a space? Well it happened just now on the tube. As I boarded a person with a young child gasped “I’m scared of dogs!”
@tyberinger @Jettlynnlato They said the same thing about pumps- the price would come down when use among people with diabetes was common. Insulin usage is up but so is price. The core market is inelastic.
@tyberinger also drives me nuts seeing other t1d parents thinking wealthy influencers paying put of pocket for cgms will increase demand and make them more affordable for diabetics who need them…gurlie we know that shit doesn't trickle down!!

@tyberinger not diabetic, but my kid is it drives me NUTS when non-diabetics do this! i saw one guy talking about how his blood sugar "spiked" from 114 mg/dl to 133 mg/dl after eating a beignet and i was like...that is no spike lol my kid would easily hit 500 mg/dl for that
