this part made me laugh cause i always assumed the hacking minigame in fallout was meant to represent actual hacking techniques but apparently it's literal which means in this universe hacking is just a game of hangman. like, children could do it.
@tredlocity no its like arghh its like a memory dump, the bottom half is an unrelated memory dump a "hacker" caused and the top half is the password screen. so the "hacker" looks for plaintext phrases(which represents passwords or other files) and chooses one with limited guesses
@tredlocity it's not too far off a real world hacking technique called a Cold Boot Attack. You reboot a machine and dump it's ram, and look for passwords in the recent history buffer. You don't usually get the dump next to a prompt to try them, or the hints about how close you are tho lmao
@tredlocity I did think it was very dumb they didn't reinvent hacking for the show.
@tredlocity I mean maybe the Hacking skill reflects getting through to the minigame. What if this was an inbuilt game in all the terminals and the vulnerability was that you could just reroute the password checker through it?
@tredlocity Lmao or just get it wrong Exit Get it wrong Repeat until you pick the right one
@tredlocity If an O.S. has been around for about 200 years I'm sure all its exploits and workarounds would be very well catalogued
