Most people assume a smartwatch on their wrist provides a complete picture of heart health. In reality, optical photoplethysmography (the green LED) only tracks capillary pulse waves, easily corrupted by sweat and motion. Taking a true ECG still requires sitting motionlessly with your finger held against the watch case for 30 seconds. For the past few years, I have been working on DORA. It is a neuromorphic-like architecture written in pure Rust. Right now, we are focused on porting this model directly into embedded hardware for continuous cardiac monitoring in both athletic performance and medicine, optimizing it for microcontrollers with zero dynamic memory allocation. Why a chest-worn form factor and true ECG rather than a wristband? Meaningful cardiac risk detection and athletic thresholds demand access to the fine electrical microstructure of the heart, specifically ventricular repolarization (the T-wave) and micro-variations between consecutive beats. During benchmark validation on the PhysioNet Sudden Cardiac Death Holter Database (covering over 200 hours of continuous dual-lead recordings), our algorithm triggered risk warnings an average of 32 minutes ahead of fatal ventricular arrhythmia or sudden cardiac arrest. Simultaneously, for endurance sports, the very same signal enables continuous tracking of aerobic and anaerobic thresholds via real-time DFA alpha 1 analysis, eliminating the need for finger-prick blood lactate sampling. I am currently assembling the first hardware prototype. Inside is an ESP32-S3 paired with an AD8232 analog front-end, interfacing with an elastic chest strap featuring integrated dry conductive electrodes. All computation and inference execute directly on the microcontroller itself, with zero dependency on heavy cloud infrastructure. This weekend, we begin field testing the hardware during our first training runs. There is still substantial work ahead in tuning analog filter stages and suppressing motion artifacts, but seeing pure Rust code come alive inside a physical wearable on the chest is an incredible milestone.
