You can love a character and still admit when they're wrong. I love Shane Hollander but can acknowledge his flaws (he has none) & can hold him accountable for his wrongdoings (he’s never done anything wrong in his life) & call him out for his actions (which are always correct)

Ilya IS the party guy, that isn't just a facade because he is that extroverted, shit talking, party-loving kind of guy. But Shane has always been able to pick up on the underlying bit of sadness, which is why RR has him suggesting therapy so early in TLG.
I dont' think this is Shane hate, btw, I recognize what OP is saying. I just don't agree. In HR, Shane was always noticing more than Ilya wanted him to see -- the Sochi blow-up for example and even during the Tuna Melt situation (although not an example re: depression).
People keep emphasizing that OP wrote "at first" so it doesn't apply to Shane suggesting he get therapy in the second book, but Shane has noticed since Heated Rivalry that Ilya is not okay 🫠
one of the saddest things about Ilya’s mental health struggles TO ME was that there was nothing visibly “wrong” with him. he was outwardly the smiley outgoing life of the party guy. Put on happy so well even Shane didn’t recognize anything at first.
