We can build more housing in the suburbs and create more walkable spaces through small retrofits, all while preserving the qualities that make suburban living appealing.
@the_transit_guy So your solution to suburbs is to make them like cities with increased density and traffic, the very things suburban residents moved to avoid?
@the_transit_guy There's this new area being built in Utrecht, it's Leidse Reijn, you would really like it. When I cycled past it with my friend, I told him they would never build this in the USA.
@the_transit_guy And, as I've found, when all the homes are in a certain price range, you attract the same demographic of people. They tend to think alike (and look alike - at least historically) and that is toxic. It's not a representation of an actual community
@the_transit_guy Build it and if people want it, it will succeed. My guess is most people living in dense urban areas enjoy what that offers them and many people who move to the suburbs do because they’ll have their own backyard and do it for that reason. The market responds to what people want.
@the_transit_guy "Small retrofit"
@the_transit_guy This exact plan was tried already. I wish I had a link to give you, but the conversation I remember was that within a year of the apartments being complete, what had been a nice, single family home neighborhood with little to no crime turned into a crime-ridden ghetto.
@the_transit_guy People that buy single family homes often don’t want apartments near their house because……
