Hello my friends! Putting out a CfP for @IMC_Leeds 2024 on medieval onomastics in times of crisis and stasis. Please retweet! #IMC2024
Announcing Edition 2023! dmnes.wordpress.com/2023/01/02/ann…
Throwback Thursday: Estonian nicknames dmnes.wordpress.com/2022/03/03/thr…
@SaraLUckelman the DMNES is so cool, I am an enjoyer of it
Last year was a tough year, in terms of getting anything done, much less anything done on the Dictionary. We can only hope 2022 will be better, and what better way to kick things off than our first newly finalized entry of the year? The next edition will have entry for LEFRICH.

Sara notes the value of such namescapes in fostering a sense of both local community with children's immediate peer groups as well as wider national identities. e.g. with the ONS persona name records for each year. Extremely valuable.
Sara Uckelman is now presenting on the SNSBI's recently-established schools outreach working group. How can we best introduce and tie name studies to the wider curriculum?
Another place-name change. Kipperlynn, Northumb. It was Skitterlyn in 1307, possibly from OE *scitere ‘channel or stream used as an open sewer’, and Mawer suggests association with skite ‘to void excrement’ meant a change to Skipperline then Kipperlynn. @SaraLUckelman @theDMNES
@SaraLUckelman @theDMNES Thanks for the tweet, Sara! Credit to @The_EPNS and the Key to English Place-Names for the info on the name’s origin!
Today's wonderful place name titbit, courtesy of @dh_parkin, is Belgrave, Leics: 'Beautiful grove'. Originally, Merdegrave, 'marten/weasel grove', it was altered in the 12th century due to the association of the first element with OFr merde, 'excrement'.
@yankeepapist @theDMNES for all your pre-18th century European name facts
The best part about the Olympics is ALL THE NAMES.
In a single short chapter, the medieval Italian scribe of the manuscript I'm currently working on has managed to spell the name "Barnabas" as 1. Barnabas 2. Barbanas 3. Barnaba 4. Barsaba 5. Barbana 6. Barbasa 🥴
Oooh, it's our first "Phineas"! Recorded in the registers of the Walloon Church in Canterbury in 1599, in the spelling "Phinees".
dmnes.org/names Dictionary of Medieval Names from European Sources
Good Biblical naming: Abraham Monier named his son Isaac, in 1597.
Awww, witness no. 3 for this 1596 baptism is "Grandmere Lansel". I love it!

@itsginnydi I've helped people find medieval names for decades in the SCA. I tend to look at lists of medieval names, especially if the character is human. Name research is often the longest part of character generation for me.
Clearly close captioning is not doing great with medieval Catalan names.
The auto-captioning has renamed certain Elisenda in @sarahifftdecker's paper as Elephant, Conference Center, Ellison, and I Listened, while Astrug Caravida has become Oscar Dededede and Ostrich Krishna.
@EHopeDoherty Does Sara's dictionary of medieval names have any literary examples that you could use? Clarice is on there: dmnes.org/name/Clarice
@hub_nationalist @Vritrahan2014 Not true at all. In many Indo European languages(French, German, Spanish), we have names derived from Wolf - such as Rudolf (fame+wolf), Adolf/Adolfo (noble+wolf), Wolfgang, Lobo (Wolf in Portuguese) etc. In MB, Bhima's nickname is Vrukodara (wolf+belly).
Last names like "Jackson" we're literaly because you were "Jack's son" but it guess it's funny because he's not a medieval white guy?
I just learned that De’Aaron Fox’s dad’s name is Aaron Fox, which means he named his son “from Aaron Fox”
@SaraLUckelman @DzintraSullivan @theDMNES Awesome, thanks!
Such an interesting article! 🍀
