Surprisingly, all of these apps are neglecting the best feature of App Clips for growth; ephemeral push notifications On by default, App Clips can send a push notification to the lock screen of any visitor for up to 8 hours
These App Clips are read-only and designed to pique your interest. They've reserved any write operations (commenting, liking, saving) for their full app, as too much functionality would cannibalize installs
Google Maps allows recipients to view the location in their App Clip, but all other functionality, search, navigation, and saving, is not allowed
TikTok has a similar App Clip to Instagram. A small feed of videos related to the original. Any button press results in a prompt to install
When an Instagram Reel is shared, the recipient can view the shared video plus a few others before being prompted to install
They're all using App Clips as a landing zone for shared content, and anticipating that conversion rates from App Clip --> Install will be greater than App Store Page --> Install
Apps need installs, users, and subscription revenue. Allowing a user to finish a transaction without installing is likely unwise at a point of high intent However, the App Clip strategy used by these behemoths would be beneficial for an app of any size
App Clips are awesome for transactions where downloading an app is annoying (parking meters, checking out, ticketing), but the UX improvement usually conflicts with an app developer's financial interests
