@MichaelFKane @jmgwritten Of course. And not every interpretation is reasonable. But I don't think a work being more broadly interpreted than the author intended is failure. I think that is often a sign that the writer successfully tapped into something truly real in the human experience.

So many of these takes rest on the belief that physical beauty is the only thing that matters. Charlize Theron is lovely to look at, but her lifestyle and worldview leave me thinking she wouldn’t be someone I’d enjoy spending time with. Love is more than a beauty contest. Furthermore, people who are lovely to be with grow more beautiful in our eyes over time.

I actually think there’s a caveat to this. If you’re adapting Robin Hood or Austen or some of Shakespeare’s works, there is a bit of a free pass, because they’ve been done so much, if someone hates your adaptation, they’ll just go back and watch the version they like. However, the problem arises when you adapt a work which there is great hunger for but little or no existing adaptations to lean into. Then fans desperate to see their vision brought to life feel almost forced into an experience of your vision. And if you then fail to capture the heart that they fell in love with, you earn their ire.

If the modern world has trained conservatives to do anything, it’s too look past artists stepping on our toes to see something great. At the same time, there is a line. And that line is unquestionably closer today than it was four years ago. I’ll be interested to find out if Nolan has crossed it or not. I hope not. I love Nolan and I’d love to see a truly great adaptation of the Odyssey, but there are some very concerning choices on display.
