Star of the Month Marlon Brando's musical role in GUYS AND DOLLS ('55) seemed unlikely until director Joseph Mankiewicz convinced him by saying, "You have never done a musical; neither have I. We never did Shakespeare either." The two had just finished JULIUS CAESAR ('53).
@tcm My absolute favorite part of the movie was the night in Havana. Makes me want to drink rum just thinking about it.
@tcm But apparently Brando was quite versed in the Bard. @BarbraStreisand says he once called her and asked her to sing for him. She balked and said that she doesn’t call him and ask him to recite Hamlet’s soliloquy. He then proceeded to do just that.
@tcm I love the musical. But giving Brando the main singing role and Sinatra the role written for a non singer did not make sense.
@tcm I love this film. I think he’s a terrific Sky. Frank is perfectly typecast as Nathan & I’m here for it EVERY TIME!!!
@tcm Sinatra’s bitterness over not playing Skye is such a bummer because he’s PERFECT as Nathan. Brando couldn’t have done what Snots did in that role.
@tcm Love this musical. Played Nicely on stage during my junior year of high school. My dad will never forget my singing "Sit Down, You're Rocking the Boat".
