I've heard that artists on Spotify make practically nothing these days. But AI says they make pretty decent money?
🎧 How much does Spotify earn compared to artists?
Short answer: Spotify earns a lot, but artists do not receive most of that money directly.
💰 How Spotify makes money
Spotify’s revenue comes mainly from two sources:
1️⃣ Premium subscriptions
Users pay a monthly fee (e.g. €9.99/month, family plans, student plans).
This is Spotify’s largest revenue source.
2️⃣ Advertising (free users)
Free users hear ads.
Advertisers pay Spotify based on impressions and reach.
👉 Together, this creates billions in annual revenue.
In recent years, Spotify’s annual revenue has been around €15+ billion, with improving profitability.
🔁 How money flows to artists
Spotify does not pay artists a fixed amount per stream.
Instead:
Spotify pools all revenue (subscriptions + ads)
About 70% of total revenue is paid out to rights holders
About 30% stays with Spotify (platform, staff, R&D, marketing, infrastructure)
👉 Rights holders include:
Record labels
Distributors
Publishers
Songwriters
Independent artists (if they own their masters)
🎵 How much artists actually receive
A commonly cited average payout per stream is:
~$0.003 – $0.005 per stream
⚠️ This is an estimate, not a fixed rate.
The final amount an artist gets depends on:
Whether they are independent or signed to a label
Their contract terms
Listener location (US & EU pay more than developing markets)
Premium vs free listeners
Example:
If Spotify generates €100 in revenue:
~€70 goes to rights holders
~€30 stays with Spotify
From that €70, a label may take 50–85%
The artist receives what remains

🔑 Why artists often complain about Spotify payouts
Spotify earns massive total revenue
Artists see very small per-stream income
Labels and intermediaries take a large cut
Streaming replaces higher-margin album sales
That’s why many artists say:
“Spotify makes a lot of money, but artists see very little of it.”
✅ Summary
Spotify keeps ~30% of revenue
~70% goes to rights holders
Artists receive a fraction of that 70%, depending on deals
Big artists earn well due to volume
Small artists struggle with streaming alone
