@PNJeffries @nzarchitecture but the minute you couple generation and evaluation into any kind of "optimization," you end up restricted to -- or at least strongly privileging -- the things-it's-easy-to-generate and the things-it's-easy-to-evaluate.
@PNJeffries @nzarchitecture We're also very bad at #2. The things we can evaluate/simulate are very limited compared to the range of things that actually matter for a design to be "good." I am a big believer in analysis as a partner in design, and we can and should use the analysis tools at our disposal...
@PNJeffries @nzarchitecture No matter how good your generative model is, it's exceptionally hard to get it to come up with new ideas. It's very good at "variations on a theme" but not inventing new themes. A significant portion of design is about theme-invention!
@PNJeffries @nzarchitecture As an industry we haven't done the work of developing the algorithmic vocabulary to develop valid, novel solutions. Almost every example I've seen produces either varied, but mostly non-functional/invalid solutions, or a gazillion valid solutions that are all effectively the same
@PNJeffries @nzarchitecture I actually disagree. for optimization to work, you need: 1. an algorithmic generator of valid, novel solutions 2. a meaningful mechanism for automatically evaluating the quality of a solution Most real-world design problems have neither.
