Asking AI to make a clone of an app does not prove anything. There’s a reference, so it’s pretty straightforward. Back in the day, devs used to have portfolio projects like Netflix clone, YouTube clone, etc. Does this mean the junior dev trying to get their first internship or regular job is better than the engineering team at Google and Netflix? What makes an engineer valuable is not necessarily their ability to write code, it is context. And this is what LLMs struggle with. There’s a reason why a mid level or even junior engineer can onboard a senior engineer. The new senior may be very talented and experienced but has no context about how they do things in the company. They don’t even know why certain decisions were made. They’ll spend their first few weeks asking dumb questions until they get up to speed. You can choose to burn tokens to resolve an incident or simply ping the guy who will just say "tune autovacuum per table and everything will be fine".

Do startups early. And try your utmost best to be great at it. One of the worst disservices you can do to yourself is to be a shitty founder. Try your best to build an equitable organization, take your investor relationships extremely seriously, report the bad just as clearly as you report the good. Don’t be a whiner and let it be clear how much effort you are putting into building a great company. The learnings you take from all of this stay with you for life. In the past 5 years I’ve learnt so much about dealing with uncertainty and managing anxiety. As such, I’m confident about my adaptability in the face of global innovation.
