given that the extended metaphor of ‘the matrix’ is still, possibly more than ever, essential for understanding the modern zeitgeist, i think it’s worth noting how crazy over the top the christian thematics are in the third matrix film. i wouldn’t say the ‘the matrix’ “is christian” or anything like that - i don’t think it maps over one system at all. i suspect most people know this in general, vaguely, but the specifics, especially the end of the film, almost beat you over the head with how surprisingly direct it is (spoilers obviously): 1. neo’s name is neo anderson (agent smith calls him mr. anderson): his name is “new son of man”. 2. his girlfriend is trinity. he’s literally with “trinity” and assisted by “trinity” the entire film. 3. their ship is called “the logos”. neo and trinity literally ride “the logos” out to achieve peace for mankind. 4. the final battle for the humans takes place at zion (isaiah: “so the lord almighty will come down to do battle on Mount Zion and on its heights.”) this is where it gets almost comically over the top: 5. when neo gets to the machine city, he meets some type of head machine consciousness. it’s not explained, but this thing created the matrix and controls all machines, so it’s not a stretch to call it something like the machine god. to end the war and vanquish the film’s villain, neo becomes the intermediary between the machine god and the evil force now controlling the matrix (there is one intermediary between God and man, etc.) if that sounds like a stretch, when he becomes this intermediary, he is literally illumined on screen by a cross, point blank (see below). 6. after this “intermediary” act is completed, right after the cross illumination you see below, neo passes out, and the machine god says, “it is done”. obviously if you are familiar with the gospels, in John, Jesus says “it is finished” after his crucifixion. i suspect given the popular image and framing of the matrix most people think the parallels are vague allusions or something. i think considering its place as, i would say, a pillar of modern popular culture in general, especially online, it’s surprising how unambiguous and direct this is. given that the fourth film was unplanned, from my understanding, this was supposed to be the end of the film series, at least at the time: literally directly visually and verbally referencing - essentially quoting from - the gospel of john.

It's a luxury belief that relies on "surely someone will stop me and I won't actually get my way" to work, and it's what ties this story to the other stuff that's going on today, like being a leftist, the anti nuclear campaign in Europe, or European lumpenelites perspective on war with Russia. They expect to lose the argument, and the fantasy is losing indignantly, and being overly moral martyrs: I would have saved us all BUT [you] didn't let me. I would have gone renewable energy, but the chuds didn't let me. I would have declared nuclear war on Russia to save Ukraine, but the chuds didn't let me. I would have let the murderer go free, but the chuds didn't let me They want to lose, and they get upset and confused the more they get to have their way. Success, even to them, is to lose, so they can be indignant

there are some number of bad abstractions in anthropomorphizing ai intents but there are at this point more dangers from avoiding anthropomorphism at all costs. if you have a mental picture of guys living in computers, it’ll likely prepare you for the future better than otherwise

It’s crazy how up until the late 20th century you could be a genuine mystery. There’s this one French model whose real name no one can really tell, nor her age, race or if she is or isn’t trans. People just genuinely cannot fathom that those who work in AI are trying to be honest and candid about what the risks seem to be. I think it’s true that we undersell the benefits and are ~bad at marketing, but the notion that risk discourse is a branding tactic is simply wrong.
