The Zcash Orchard exploit is bigger than Zcash. This isn't a Zcash-specific problem. In any ZK privacy system, the same property that makes transactions private also makes counterfeiting undetectable if the proof breaks. The math alone can't be your only line of defense. Hardware that enforces the same rules closes the gap. THE BUG • Root cause: under-constrained element in the Orchard ZK circuit • False inputs to elliptic curve multiplication still passed proof verification • Could generate unlimited, undetectable ZEC inside a shielded pool TIMELINE • May 2022 → Bug introduced with Orchard activation • May 29, 2026 → Discovered by Taylor Hornby using Anthropic Opus 4.8 during a targeted audit • Jun 2, 2026 → Emergency patch deployed via hard fork (block 3,364,600) • Jun 5, 2026 → Public disclosure. ZEC −31% WHY IT'S SERIOUS • 4.5M ZEC (~$2.6B at pre-drop price) sitting in Orchard Undetected for 4 years including under scrutiny from the world's best cryptographers. • Cryptographically impossible to prove the bug wasn't exploited before the fix. The same privacy guarantee that protects users is what makes supply integrity unauditable. Now you know a shift is needed. >shift

lamport signatures are beautiful it starts with you making a bunch of secret pairs, hashing them, and then publishing those hashes as your public key. when you want to sign a message, you hash the message and reveal one secret from each pair based on the bits of that hash. the verifier just hashes your revealed secrets and checks whether they match what you published and if that’s the whole trick then but why is it so beautiful? because it only works once, you can’t use the same key again and again cause if you do then it will start leaking enough information for someone to eventually break the puzzle and forge your signatures. And that makes it not much practical for everyday systems. but as a primitive method, it’s elegant in the way good cryptography should be. just simple logic, strong assumptions, no unnecessary drama, just hashes doing exactly what they’re supposed to do. >shift
