Watch what happens as @gatesfoundation stops paying article publishing fees, shifts to peer reviewed preprints, & advocates for “low-cost digital publishing platforms”. I predicted this 5 years ago! Advancing Equity and Innovation in Research Publishing cgdev.org/blog/advancing…
@seyeabimbola @gatesfoundation Who reads everything already published? Do we need even more manuscripts? And once these financial barriers for people like us are gone, competition will further rely on branding. People will add "funded by" or use institutional names/compilations as a guarantee of quality.
@seyeabimbola @gatesfoundation “Two key challenges persist in research publishing: timeliness and openness. Journal publications often take months or in some cases, more than a year to be published, and the majority of research remains behind paywalls.”.
@seyeabimbola @gatesfoundation Well predicted. Definitely time for disruption in this field.
@seyeabimbola @gatesfoundation Does that mean folks in the LMICs also have to pay APFs?
@seyeabimbola @gatesfoundation The entire system needs a complete overhaul. I can’t believe how long we have endured it. A shake up like this might be a step in the right direction.
