The devotions of every single parishioner focused on the sister of a Saxon king for five hundred years until the Reformation. They knew the story of her life, including the fact she was a virgin who refused to marry the king of Northumbria and instead chose to become a nun. The Anglo-Saxon past was alive and well throughout the Middle Ages, both among ordinary Englishpeople, and among writers and chroniclers, many of whom described the Norman Conquest as a disaster for the Anglo-Saxons and their liberty. These are basic facts.

There is something particularly sinister about the casual 30 extra pounds that every young woman seems to be wearing. The classic fat girl has committed to her lifestyle. They think you’ll just accept it. Where the classic fat girl rolls out of bed each day to stare 10,000 calories in the face and say “game on,” the neo-fat girl is just lazy. She’s not fat because she loves eating, she’s just given up and doesn’t give a shit about her appearance. In the 2010’s, women complained all the time about “unrealistic standards of female beauty” (being skinny), but they also stayed skinnier! We must return. Every commercial, every magazine endcap — an emaciated woman. It kept everybody honest.
