कल दिन में मैं एक्टिव न रहा शाम को ज़ब ऑनलाइन आया तो @108_Anuradha की मृत्यु की खबर टाइमलाइन पर दिखी। जो बेहद निराश करने वाली व पीड़ादायक खबर रही, एक विदुषी महिला असमय मृत्यु को प्राप्त हुई। मृत्यु का कारण टायफाइड औऱ पीलिया जैसी बीमारी रही, एक पोस्ट में उन्होंने बताया भी था उन्हें टाइफाइड कहीं पर दूषित पानी पीने के कारण हुआ। दूषित पानी आपके स्वास्थ्य औऱ जीवन के लिए कितना घातक हो सकता है ये आप उनकी मृत्यु के खबर से ही जान सकते हैं। यदि बाहर हैं तो कोशिस करिये बोतल बंद पानी का इस्तेमाल करें, नल, दुकान के ड्रम वाला पानी या ऐसे स्थान पर पानी न पिए जहाँ का एरिया साफ सुथरा न हो गंदगी हो, क्योंकि आपकी एक बार की प्यास आपके जीवन के लिए नुकसानदेह साबित हो सकती है। ईश्वर अनुराधा जी की आत्मा को शांति प्रदान करें।

आज मैंने 13 वर्षों की अविस्मरणीय यात्रा को अपनी इच्छा से विराम देते हुए IAS से त्यागपत्र दे दिया है। साधारण परिवेश में पलते हुए मैंने एक अच्छे, सफल जीवन का सपना देखा था। दिन-रात एक कर IIT दिल्ली और IIM बैंगलोर से पढ़ने के बाद, लंदन में नौकरी लग गयी। पर 'सब कुछ' पा लेने पर भी कुछ अधूरा था। अपने देश में न होना खलता था। मेरी पढ़ाई, आत्मविश्वास, दुनिया में कहीं भी सिर उठाकर चलने की ताक़त, सब इस मिट्टी का कर्ज़ था मुझ पर। वो कर्ज़ चुकाना था। चाहती थी जिस भारत का सपना देखा था, उसे बनाने वाली ईंटों पर मेरे भी हाथों के निशान हों। सो लौट आई, और IAS अधिकारी बनने का सौभाग्य मिला। बहुत कुछ करने का मौका मिला और बहुत सीखा। देवरिया ने सिखाया कि सही के साथ खड़ा होना विकल्प नहीं, कर्तव्य है। मीरजापुर ने सिखाया कि 'असंभव' कोई तथ्य नहीं, बस एक राय है। और माँ विंध्यवासिनी के चरणों में बैठकर सीखा कि शक्ति किसी पद से नहीं, उनकी कृपा और लोगों के विश्वास से आती है। सबसे बड़ी सीख यह थी कि अपने लिए देखे सपने तो पूरे हो चुके थे, अब अपने लोगों के लिए देखे सपनों को जीना था। इस जीवन का असली सुकून उन आँखों में दिखा, जिस परिवार को पहली बार ज़मीन का हक़ मिला, जिस दिव्यांग को सम्मान से जीने का अवसर मिला, और जिस किसान के खेत को पानी मिला। उनके संघर्षों में साथ चलते हुए मैंने सीखा कि हर सरकारी फ़ाइल के पीछे एक व्यक्ति है, और उसकी गरिमा बनाये रखना ही न्याय है। मूर्ख थी जो सोचा था कि कुछ देने आयी हूँ। सच यह है कि सबसे ज़्यादा मैंने ही पाया, और वो कर्ज़ और भी बढ़ता गया। लोग मेरी ख़ुशी में मुझसे ज़्यादा ख़ुश हुए। उन्होंने मुझे तब भी उसी विश्वास से देखा, जब मैं खुद ही थकी या टूटी थी। और इसी ने आगे बढ़ते रहने की हिम्मत दी। इतना प्यार, इतना सम्मान, इतना अपनापन मिला, कि मेरी झोली पूरी भर गयी। और इसमें उन साथियों, अधिकारियों और कर्मचारियों का भी बहुत बड़ा श्रेय है जिन्होंने मेरे कंधे से कंधा मिलाकर काम किया और साथ डटे रहे। आज आभार से आँखें नम हैं। बस एक दृश्य इनमें बसा है। लहुरिया दह की पहाड़ी की वो वृद्ध माँ, जो अपने गाँव में पहली बार पानी पहुँचता देख कुछ नहीं बोली, बस काँपते हाथों से मेरा सिर छूकर आशीर्वाद दे गई। पद तो आज छूट गया, पर वह स्पर्श जीवन भर नहीं छूटेगा। और वह सपना भी नहीं छूटेगा, जो देश की इस मिट्टी ने मुझे दिया है। आपकी अपनी, दिव्या मित्तल

The IIT Boy from Pune Who Taught Hollywood How to Make a Digital Face Feel Human.... Think of Will Smith's face in Hancock. Think of a superhero's mask somehow moving with the actor's face underneath it, instead of sitting on it like a rubber prop. Think of SpiderMan's unmasked face reading as a real, breathing person instead of a video game render. None of that emotion on screen is a raw actor's face. It is math, wearing a performance like a second skin. And the man who helped build the mathematics behind it, honoured by the Academy itself for it is someone most of the Indians have never heard of. Dr. Parag Havaldar..... The whole modern era of digital facial performance began with Gollum in The Lord of the Rings, where Andy Serkis physically acted out Gollum's every movement, and animators then manually, painstakingly, copied that performance onto Gollum's digital face by hand. Serkis himself has said it plainly: on Lord of the Rings, there was no real facial capture at all, it was animators copying his expressions frame by frame, essentially redrawing his face by eye, over and over. It worked. It even won awards. But it was slow, expensive, and depended entirely on an animator's individual skill at guessing what a human face was actually doing. Hollywood could not scale that. Every new movie, every new digital face, meant starting the guesswork all over again from zero. This is the exact problem one engineer, at one studio, decided to take on.... Havaldar graduated from the Department of Computer Science & Engineering at IIT Kharagpur in 1991, then went on to complete his Master's and PhD in Computer Vision and Graphics at the University of Southern California in 1996. He started with a brief stint in the early video game industry, writing software for the Sega and Nintendo platforms, then moved through startups working to commercialize early MPEG video compression standards....unglamorous, technical, foundational work, years before anyone in that world was thinking about digital acting. Eventually, that path led him to Sony Pictures Imageworks, where he would spend well over a decade building and refining the studio's own approach to digital faces. Solving the Face, Not Just Copying It.... Havaldar's team took a completely different approach, instead of animators manually copying an actor's expression by eye, they built a system that borrowed formulations from computer vision, psychology, behavioral science, and even medical anatomy, combined with the animation workflows artists already used. The result was expression-based facial performance-capture technology, a system that combined solutions for tracking an actor's face, stabilizing that data, mathematically solving the expressions, and giving animators fine, curve-based control to refine the performance afterward. In plain terms... Instead of an animator staring at footage and hand copying a raised eyebrow frame by frame, the system could now understand the structure of a human expression, the underlying muscles and movements, and translate that understanding onto any digital face, at scale, reliably, film after film. This technology was first used to build hyperreal, stylized digital faces for films like Monster House and Beowulf, and was then continually refined and deployed for Marvel's SpiderMan series, Green Lantern, Watchmen, Hancock, and Alice in Wonderland. Havaldar has noted there was cross-pollination between this work and the parallel facial-animation pipelines other studios were building for films like Avatar, Planet of the Apes, and Avengers, a period where the whole industry was racing to solve the same problem. Havaldar himself has described some of the specific, almost invisible challenges his team solved: capturing Will Smith's exact facial expressions for Hancock, making Ryan Reynolds' CGI mask move seamlessly with his real face for Green Lantern, and building a photoreal digital version of Tobey Maguire and James Franco for SpiderMan that moved and emoted like an ordinary human being, not a video game character. You watched these films. You felt something during those scenes. That feeling was built by directors, animators, lighting and compositing artists, and the actors' own performances, but underneath a good deal of it sat a piece of mathematics from an IIT Kharagpur grad, quietly doing its job so well you never had reason to notice it was there. In 2017, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences honoured Dr. Parag Havaldar with a Scientific and Technical Achievement Award, specifically for the development of this expression-based facial performance-capture technology at Sony Pictures Imageworks. After more than a decade building this pipeline at Sony, Havaldar shifted into gaming, joining Blizzard Entertainment, believing that as interactive storytelling evolves, gaming may soon rival, or even surpass, film as the dominant medium for the very technology he helped develop. That is what it means to be a nepathya ka nayak in the age of cinema itself, the man behind the face you cried for, never once appearing on screen.
