In Indy, Dan Quinn told us a story about once inviting legendary Packers exec Ron Wolf to Atlanta to help scout college QBs. "I can remember we were watching one player and there was an interception, and [Wolf] had said, ‘Wind that back’. And I was looking, thinking he was thinking about the interception. ‘No, no, you could let it run now.’ And it was to see: How hard was the player going after that had the interception? He wasn't looking at the mechanics of the throw. He was studying the person and the competitiveness."
Ten weeks into looking at these QBs -- desperate for something new to talk about -- I wondered: What would Wolf have seen this year? So, I watched every collegiate pick from Jayden Daniels (20), Drake Maye (16) and JJ McCarthy (11).
My biggest takeaway: Jayden Daniels pursues like he runs -- with abandon. Doesn't mind hitting, credited with five career tackles. Look at the end of clip 6 vs. Arkansas.
Drake Maye rarely had picks run back (just 4/16). Not sure why. Arm strength? Depth of target? Circumstance? During returns, he pursued but didn't invite contact, which you could argue is poor competitiveness or smart preservation.
JJ McCarthy is kinda similar to Maye in pursuit. More picks run back (6/11). Maybe partly because he was intercepted short more often.
What does all this mean? No idea. The Commanders might not care at all. But Dan Quinn remembered Ron Wolf's point several years later, so I thought it was worth it to go back and watch.
