@ardent__dev claude pro, purely for claude code in the terminal. the chat interfaces are all roughly the same to me. giving it a shell and letting it read the actual repo is the part that changed my week.
@pcshipp every line that touches state, yes. it's very good at plausible appkit code that leaks a retain cycle you won't see for a week. the bugs it writes aren't stupid, they're subtle, which is worse.
@AbhiCodes15 tell me whether an interaction feels right. i can describe a gesture in words and get working code back instantly. i cannot get an answer to is 180ms too slow for this flick. that requires a hand, and it's most of what building a good desktop app actually is.
your launcher is a piece of software you use more than your editor and think about less than your wallpaper. spotlight, raycast, alfred, all a text box. you type the name of a thing you already know you want. orbs skips the typing. hold, flick, launch.
@jahirsheikh8 the shortcut is to pick something small and unglamorous and finish it. i wrote a launcher for macos. six hardcoded slices to start. three weeks after shipping it, 85 people use it. that taught me more than any roadmap would have.
@devXritesh optimize for simplicity is the one that took me longest. my first radial menu had six hardcoded slices. i replaced it with a clever generalised layout engine, hated it, and went back to something almost as dumb as the original. the dumb version is what shipped.
@SakshiSugandhi the specs weren't the problem, the fans were. and the four hours of battery. and the two kilos. coding machines get judged on the boring stuff: silence, weight, trackpad, how long it lasts unplugged. nobody's compiling a shader at 240fps.
@tecmint ifconfig to ip is the one that catches everyone, mostly because ifconfig still exists on macos so muscle memory never gets corrected. ss over netstat is the upgrade i actually noticed. it's just faster on a box with a lot of sockets open.
@oprydai buying it changes nothing. the first week of setting it up does. most people spend three thousand dollars and then use it exactly like the machine they left, mouse to the dock, cmd+tab through nine identical icons. the hardware was never the upgrade.
@ryukozyy if the criterion is freedom it's linux, and it isn't close. i run it on every box without a screen. i still write my desktop app for macos, because that's where people actually pay for native tools. those two facts sit badly together and i've made peace with it.
@Aditya_181105 thinkpad keyboard, macbook trackpad, and neither company will ever give you both. i ended up on the mac because gestures are only worth building on when the input is that precise. the keyboard i just fixed with remapping.
@sonialy0 neither, honestly. the laptop isn't the variable. what actually changes your day is what your hands do a hundred times an hour. i've watched people on four thousand dollar macs hunt the dock with a mouse all day. spend an hour on your keybindings instead.
@Taniyatweets_ the trackpad, genuinely. it's the only one precise enough that gesture input is worth building on. i wrote a radial launcher for macos entirely because flicking on that trackpad is accurate to a few degrees. try that on any other laptop and it feels like mud.
@Surendar__05 because most developers didn't choose their laptop, their employer did. and powerful isn't the reason to be on a mac anyway. it's that the terminal is a real unix one and the window management is fixable. the raw specs are the least interesting part.
@jiya_3063 air with 24gb unless you're running local models. ram is the only spec that ages badly. the cpu will still be plenty in four years, the 16gb won't be. i write swift all day on an air and it never gets warm.
@SaraDiscovers price, mostly. and gaming. macs aren't built for developers, they just happen to have unix underneath and a gui that doesn't fight you. i run linux on every machine without a screen and mac on the one i actually touch all day.
@BratDotAI the subreddit where your users already complain about the problem. for my mac app that was r/macapps. three posts there beat a month of posting on x. x got me conversations, reddit got me installs. they're not the same thing.

@nikitathakur21 i could've built that is usually true and completely beside the point. my launcher started as six hardcoded slices in an afternoon. anyone could have written that afternoon. almost nobody writes the next three weeks, and that's the whole product.
